November 2017 Chemo Starters

I haven’t really fancied food this week, my daughter made me a risotto earlier. I did stuff chocolate at the weekend but I’m struggling now, as everything tastes blah!!

I haven’t had food cravings. I cut sugar out since diagnosis. Surgeon on way out the door said sugar was the devil to cancer eeek!!! No wine gums for me! But someone bought me a toblerone at Christmas and I’ve almost finished it! Does that count as craving???x

JC my unit don’t want to know unless temp goes under 36.5 or over 37.5
Just another difference!

Interesting on the food front - thought I’d be stuffing my cheeks like a little hamster!

I have stuffed my face today trying to make WBC. Fresh orange, apples, tin of tuna, red meat dinner, mango, raspberries, blueberries, manuka honey. Absolutely stuffed!!!
Lesley under 36.5???

Hi Otter, JC and FMB just thought I would drop in to see how the T is going? Hope you are coping ok? ??
I am Day 6/7 now (never sure whether to count chemo day as day 0 or 1).
So far prefer it to FEC although it is still pretty unpleasant. Feels like the worst of the T was Day 3/4 and I was shocked at how quickly it affected my mouth but seem to have kept it under control after the initial ulcers and bleeding lips. Now onto the GCSF pains so the same pattern as FEC (had 7 injections on FEC too). But after having terrible pain on cycle 1 I requested prescription doses of codeine which I hope should keep things manageable.
But the taste thing - euch horrid. And I am so over the steroids (which I personally suspect cause the taste issue). Their affect hangs around for so long on this dose!
Otter as well as making you eat more, the steroids actively change your glucose / insulin metabolism and make you lay down more visceral belly fat, so it isn’t just the amount you eat that is creating weight gain, so don’t feel bad that it is you ‘over eating’. I found some info on steroids retaining sodium and stripping out your potassium so getting some potassium back in might help - I have been eating a lot of bananas all of a sudden!! Now I know what to expect I am going to try to figure out the food thing a bit more for the last two cycles. Almonds, bananas, tuna mayo and tonic water are on the list so far! (And soft croissants were quite good when my mouth was hurting but probably shouldn’t have too many of those!!)
Would love to hear anything you find works for you? ???

Morning all

hope last weeks T ladies have had a good night.

First dose of steroids for me this am with my toast and manuka!

Otter - I also lost a lot of weight before diagnosis and am feeling it dreadfully… it’s the one thing that is really pulling me down.  But I gave myself a bit of a talking to and if I have lost it once, I can lose it again.  And imagine if we hadn’t lost the weight where we would be!!

I have already sorted out in my mind what food regime I am going to adopt at the end of chemo and that is only 7 weeks away!!  WOOHOOOO

? and ? to all

I off to join the queue for the ? - thank goodness I haven’t got a fast track ticket!!

xx

Hi Otter sorry to hear you are in pain honey ?
The hips seem to be a tell tale pain for the GCSF injections - in cycle 1 I was weeping from the pain as had never felt anything like it and I had a back to back labour!! Don’t skimp on the pain killers!!
Many of our Oct T girls found their temp went all over the place on T.
Take good care today ??
Lesley good luck with T prep. There is the small up side of the added energy the steroids give you today ??

Hi Lesley, Rosie has posted on May thread about a tablet called cape for tn, just wanted to let you know in case you were not aware of it. I’m going to speak to my onc next week about this. ??:sparkles::sparkles:shi xx

For all who have forgotten how to weigh themselves xx

???Anadan, love it ???:sparkles::sparkles:shi xx

Thanks so much for that anadan, can’t believe I’ve been so stupid. I will definitely be changing the way that I weigh myself in future ???
I too lost over a stone and a half before diagnosis and was walking everywhere and ironically felt so well! I have an under active thyroid so losing weight can be a challenge but I found going low carb and upping my walking really worked so I will be doing that again once chemo is over. I’m day 8 FEC 5 and went for a 2 mile walk this morning in the sunshine and it damn nearly killed me but I feel better for it. Felt like I was walking through treacle at every slight incline but getting out does help so much both mentally and physically.

Hi everyone!!
Bythesea- I think we deserve a little bit of what we fancy, including toblerone ? Btw, what is WBC? Your food list looks very healthy
Lesley, hope you got on ok today. I was told to phone unit if temp got to 37.5 or if I felt unwell. The doc then said about 38°. Mine has gone as low as 35.7 but no-one has mentioned a low temperature.
Otter - I’ve had a weight problem most of my life but have decided to treat myself to a diet after I’ve finished this ? . Mind you, due to yukky taste over the last few days I haven’t wanted much - toast & marmite, apples, iced water but I now have a rumbly tummy so may need to go downstairs on a food hunt!!
Ruth, today is day 6 for me and I have sent out for some bananas, I may need to add some croissants to the list. I’m still in bed but not as bad as the last 2 days. Tuna mayo sandwich - mmmmm ?
Maybe we can have a diet forum for after chemo as we imagine ourselves fitting into gold sequin hot pants ??
My injections finish on Monday but I have been taking paracetamol & cocodimol for mouth pain - my shaky legs aren’t so bad now but my nails feel tender :frowning:
Anadan - thank you for putting me straight!! ??
Off in search of food …
???:comet:?:comet:?:comet:?

Anadan, you made my day with the tip about how to weigh yourself. Now to persuade the nurse who does my obs that is the way forward . . .

There’s another one here for the post-treatment diet/weightloss club. It’s got to be better than the one we’re in at the moment . . . xx

Jc at my trust it’s if above 37.5 or below 35.5 ???:sparkles::sparkles:shi xx

JC I think a post chemo diet thread would be a much nicer one to be in than this one - especially if we get to keep the company but switch the topic to a much healthier one ??We can often be found chatting away about food on the Oct thread, but not necessarily if the healthy kind ?
I am a bit wobbly again today but slightly less achy. Also had biggest nose bleed so far this morning and discovered thrush in my mouth yay!! Think I have caught it early so can sort it out. Quite proud that I managed to chomp on an apple and carrot today as well as yoghurt with toasted almonds for the thrush so finally clawing myself out of the carbs frenzy ?? might have rice and tuna mayo for tea… sounds wierd I know but tastes quite nice. Guess I have to cut out the yeast products for a while so no croissants for breakfast tomorrow ?

I agree Otter, I’ve only phoned the unit twice, first time left it a bit too long, but affect the outcome but I struggled with SEs unnecessarily.

It probably isn’t a good idea Ruth to detail what food combos we are consuming on this journey … probably not a diet Michael Mosley would choose to endorse! ???

Hi Ruth and the recent T ladies. (I’m picturing the Tbird ladies from Grease ??)
I still have aches and pains and I had another ‘in bed’ today.
Looking forward to the aches going!!!
Xxxx

I now have thrush below too - this chemo just gives and gives … xx

Jc WBC is my white blood cells. Count was borderline but retest this morning was fine so I’m now 4 chemos down yay!!! Only two to go woo hoo!!! All that eating must have done the trick. Even put a pound on at weigh in ha! Not bad since over Christmas x
Beans on toast for dinner tonight mmmmm!
Anyone tried any of the recipes on this site? They all look amazing xxx

Is it the chemo that gives you thrush or the steroids?
How much more ? does it have to throw at us before it realises that we’re not giving in???

???
