October mastectomy

I am scheduled to have a Mx and DIEP reconstruction on 3 Oct and just wondered if there is anyone else going through the same or Mx only in Oct?

Hi Jo how were your SNB results ? hope they came back clear.
Jean

Hi Jo C,

Yup - I’m having a double mastectomy with delayed DIEP recon on 12 October. HOPEFULLY having expanders put in…but meeting surgeon in a couple of weeks to confirm.

Hi Jean, I get the results on 20th so fingers crossed please.
Sandy toes, that’s two of us then, let me know how you get on with the surgeon.

Am having double mx and node clearance on September 29th. Went for pre op yesterday so it all seems very real all of a sudden. Thought October thread would be better really as all September ladies will have had their ops before I even go in. Hope you don’t mind! x

good luck JCB Mum . I have found this site and threads very useful.

Hi Rachel, I’ve got my pre op tomorrow and it all suddenly seems very real to me too. You are very welcome to join this thread as you are only a few days before me on 3rd Oct.
I did find out the results from my recent SNB last night and all nodes were clear, I am so relieved.

I’m jumping in, too, as my Mx is 30 September

Jo so pleased for you that your nodes came back clear, now you can concentrate on beating this, just the Mx now.
The waiting is far worse than the operation, just keep busy and make the most of normality for a while.

JCB:“Hi I am booked to have a mastectomy and reconstruction on 11th Oct. Was diagnosed in March and had six rounds of chemo since April. 2 x FEC and 4 x Taxotere. Anyone else had neoadjuvant chemo? Would be good to compare notes”

I’m a neoadjuvant girl. But only got full results of MRIs (three since May) on Friday. Staggering. Will transfer post over from Sept.

There we are:

Hi girls, I’ve just got my date through for 30 September.

The surgeon won’t allow me a recon and I’m very upset about that.

I was told in April that I would probably be having a WLE with ANC but I was hit on Friday with radical Mx including total node clearance up to neck level, removal of chest muscle and skeletonisation(!), which sounds awful. I can’t bear the idea of going to sleep with two boobs and walking up with only one. I suppose if they were smaller it would be easier to cope with. Surgeon said that they have to keep my chest wall completely flat so that recurrences can be seen easily.

My PortaCath was put in on the side of my BC so half-way through the op, they’ll have to get the port man in to re-site it on the other side. I could never figure out why it was inserted in my poorly boob anyway - seems daft.

I have only 10 days to come to terms with the whole radical Mx and no recon idea. I was due to have a WLE on 14 October but chemo had to be stopped early due to horrible SEs so it’s all a shock and my head is a mess.

Thanks Jean. Still having problems with the surgery, counselling doesn’t seem to have helped at all. I’m not sure anything will until it’s all over.
Ninja, welcome to the thread, I can’t imagine how you are feeling. Have they suggested counselling to you? I’m having mine through the Helen Rollason trust so it’s free and they fitted me in really quickly.

Hi Jo, no, no counselling suggested.

I did see someone at the H**** twice but it didn’t benefit me at all. I have awful issues going back to childhood - which I told her about - that was preventing me moving forward, but she just wanted to talk about how well I looked etc which really wasn’t helping at all.

I had two sessions - she couldn’t remember me at the second.
There was no third.

Hi Ninja

If you give the helpline here a ring and have a chat they may be able to give you some help here, they’re here to support you through all this.

Take care,

Hi Ninja,
so sorry about your situation. I’ve PMd you xx

Ninja that counsellor sounds absolutely useless I’m not surprised you didn’t go back. Do McMillan have counsellors?

I saw my surgeon last night and told him how scared I was and how I really didn’t want the surgery and he was lovely and very supportive. He has told me to discuss it at my pre op assessment today and ask them to give me a pre med to help. I can’t believe how near it all is now.
