Hi all, I was diagnosed back in December with grade 2 IDC er+ pr+ her2- 17mm. Back then I had a mammogram and ultrasound. I had 3 operations then radiologist decided that another area from original mammo needed another inestigation. So tomorrow I’m having a stereotactic mammogram guided vacumn assisted biopsy.
No-one has told me what they think is in there. I can’t help wonder what they’re biopsying. Is it a lump, lymph node, mass, calcification? I’m worried it’s another tumour that they forgot. Has this happened to anyone else? What should I ask to try and get answers?
I was referred for stereotactic a couple of weeks ago. They had already identified IDC on mammogram, ultrasound and did core biopsy but next day called me to say they had gone back to look at mammogram and had seen areas of calcification around the IDC but also 10mm calcification on other breast. They thought they were ‘likely to be nothing’. But unfortunately were DCIS so had double mastectomy on Thursday.
I wonder if they are checking possible calcifications?
To add, just remembered- the results from the stereotactic were 10mm of up to high grade DCIS and an area of intermediate DCIS around the IDC (which was ER positive and HER2 negative) but waiting for the full pathology as also had sentinel removed on Thursday.
Thank you @lynnc123 . I’m sorry that this has happened to you but very glad that you didnt have an 8 month wait between the first and 2nd mammogram and biopsy. Hopefully for you it is all out now and once you get your sentinel lymph node and biopsy results, hopefully you can move to next stage of treatment. I wonder what they will find in me. Ive already had 3 smallish tumours, dcis, lcis and 2 affected lymph nodes…just hope this is the last now! Goid luck for your results…keep us posted. X
@bluesatsuma i am so sorry that you are still going through all this. I hope that you get good results from tomorrow and I will be thinking of you and sending hugs, love and positive thoughts xx
Bluesatsuma
Very much hoping tomorrow goes well and that a route is also found for all your very valid questions to be answered so you can have some peace of mind.
With love
xxxx
@bluesatsuma thank you. I’ve been following your appointments on here - you’ve had a horrendous time, don’t know how you’ve kept sane.
I was so lucky to get diagnosis to op in four weeks (my surgeon was also on hold for a week in between) and that was bad enough.
Really hope you get answers soon - my stereotactic results were back in a week so hoping for you xx
Thank you everyone. I know there are people with far far worse cancers than me, but I just feel that I’ve had a really elongated journey so far. I expected a rollercoaster but not onevthat goes round and round in circles for months before it goes up the slope. My husband wants us to switch trusts but I’m reluctant, and PALs have passed me to the breast care team who havent yet rang. I’ll try and ask questions tomorrow but I suspect there will be no-one free to answer them. X
Oh no @bluesatsuma you’re having such a miserable time. I do hope this time they’ll have some answers. Hopefully it just means they’re being thorough to get a full accurate picture. Awful being in limbo like that though. Thinking of you.
Thanks @anne3…though i wish they’d have been thorough 8 months ago! There are definite questions that I have a need to get answered. I will try and get somewhere tomorrow. At least I’m only 6 days from the oncologist now xxx
This happened to me too. I was diagnosed two and a half years ago when calcifications were found during a routine mammogram. After biopsies turned out I had low grade DCIS and a 10mm IDC ER+ Her2- booked in for lumpectomy. One day before my op I get a call from the senior radiologist saying they’d found further areas of concern and my op was cancelled! To say I was shocked doesn’t get near. Had to go through the whole process of biopsy and waiting again. Turned out it was more low grade DCIS so had to have a mastectomy.
I’d lost some confidence in my team and wondered why they had missed it first time around, even though I have moderately dense breasts. I asked for all my images to be sent to another trust for a second opinion and they were happy to do this. It did mean a bit more delay but it was reassuring to hear that another radiologist agreed with the findings.
It’s awful when this happens, but hats off to the radiologist who is being extra cautious for you. If they are unsure what it is they will want to biopsy it, but it’s been found and it will be dealt with. If it is anything of more concern it will probably have been found very early and that’s a good thing. Surprising they didn’t tell you what they were looking at but that may just mean it’s nothing to worry about and they’re just being super cautious. Lots of luck x
Thank you @Frances55. It is reassuring to know that all worked out for you. I think I’m just annoyed that the time it took for them to decide to investigate this was 8 months, and I’ve already had 3 surgeries. That said, I’m obviously glad that they’ve checked it. The biopsies are done now. They took 12! Hope you are well now and continue to be so x
