I was put on Zoladex and Arimidex in August because I couldn’t tolerate Tamoxifen. I’m 53 and still not post-menopausal. I’m seeing the onc next week to ask for an oophorectomy and would appreciate hearing your experiences.
For example, did you notice a difference in side effects after the oophorectomy? How long did it take to recover? Etc.
Just to let you know my experience of an oophorectomy. The surgery was far better than I had ever anticipated. I had no pain at all! Not really any discomfort either. I had tiny little incision marks. I was only in for one night and sent home the next morning. I was encouraged to have 2 weeks off work, but felt a bit of a fraud! as I felt perfectly normal and was walking about as normal.
The following week I had one day, when I felt very tearful and had a few hot flushes (I am 43) then have had NO side affects at all since then! I was changed from Tamoxifen to Aromasin, which apart from causing some aches and pains in my legs, seems to suit me better.
Thanks Nicky. I think what I’m hoping for is a decrease in SEs, especially hot flushes at night, which keep me awake for ages. But I think I’m going to go for it anyway. There was a strong suspicion that my mum’s primary cancer was ovarian, but as it was so long ago, I can’t confirm that. If it was, it seems like a good idea to get rid of them anyway.
