Operation Wednesday feeling scared

Hi,

I have my lumpectomy and sentinel Lymph node biopsy on Wednesday, and i am starting to feel slightly scared. I’m not quite sure what to expect. I was just wondering if it hurts much after? And if anyone had to stay in overnight?

I have read all the leaflets and still feel um overwhelemd I’m not sure if its because I’m still thinking not at my age (as I’m 23) or because I only got diagnosed on 29th Dec. Not knowing 100% what treatment after surgery is making me nervious they have said that that i will be having radiotherapy and hormone tablets and they said they have to wait till they have looked at the lump if i need Chemo.

From experiance the wle hardly caused any pain for me at all. I also had a anc and re ex a couple of weeks later and on both occasions was home same day.

Hi Kt23

It’s good that they are working really fast and that you didn’t have to wait long for the op, as the waiting is the worst thing. I have had a sentinel lymph node biopsy which I can honestly say was easy peasy. I have a two inch scar which you can hardly see (I only had it on 12th october) and can honestly say I felt no pain or discomfort after it whatsoever. I didn’t even have to have any stitches removed as they used dissolving ones.
I can’t speak for the lumpectomy as I haven’t had that (I am having chemo prior to having a MX) but I am sure you will be absolutely fine and I am sending you love and healing vibes!
Before you know it, it’ll be Thursday and you’ll be all done!!

Love, Mxx

Hi kt23
I had a sne and wle on the 28th dec so nearly two weeks ago.
I’m a touch older than you but I stayed in overnight as they didn’t do op till late on.
I had the op and I was a bit uncomfortable but not in any pain, no sickness from anesthatic either I was really thirsty and hungry I was eating and drinking tea a couple of hours after. The funniest is the blue wee and then went home the next day!
I haven’t been in pain my armpit was sore and feels a bit like when you use a blunt razor.
My prob is that my boobs weren’t small to start off with so had to find a bra that was comfy but managed with vests with inbuilt bra and sports bras.
I’m going for my check up and hopefully results tom! Then chemo and rads I think.
You’ll be fine its not a big op, as long as you tell them you are worried they will look after you.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Love fran

i had lumpectomy and snb last wednesday and also stayed in overnight.Dont worry as i am sure it will be fine,i havent had any problems, just been quite tired as i find it hard to sleep on my back!I also have a check up tmw,i had staples so hopefully they are removing those tmw and changing the dressing and i will be getting some results back from the operation but not all,i wont find out till next Tuesday the 17th what my next course of treatment is.The doctors and nurses where i went were amazing, they really look after you.So try not to worry, for me nothing has been worse than the feeling you get when you are told you have breast cancer, nothing matches up to the devastation of that…be strong and good luck

Hi kt

i had mine on 25 Nov and the staff were all brill and couldn’t do enough for me. It didn’t hurt afterwards - just a bit uncomfortable for a week or so. I went to the nurse at my GP surgery to get the dressing removed after 5 days and again it didn’t hurt.

It did get a bit sore around 2 weeks afterwards as things settled internally and I asked my GP for codeine based painkillers. (They will prob give you a weeks’ worth of paracetamol and poss diclofenac to take away with you when you leave hosp and it’s honestly all you need for the first week.)

All best wishes for tomorrow

Hi, I had lumpectomy and axillary clearance last May, I stayed in for 24 hours or so after the op and it was a little uncomfortable but did take painkillers which helped. After a couple of weeks I was able to do all the housework etc without any problem. Make sure you have non wired bras, sports bras from M&S were good for me for a few weeks after and button opening tops were good for a few days too, it will all be done before you know it ,xxx

I had my WLE and SNB on 9th Dec (I’m 37) - was driving 2 days later, was back in work on the 20th Dec, etc - no real pain - they gave me codeine to bring home and its still in the cupboard!! just used paracetemol and ibuprofen, best advice is to keep wearing a soft old sports bra as the weight of the breast was the only thing that caused any discomfort - underarm was no issue really - stayed in overnight cause I could - 2 and 4 year olds at home so enjoyed a peaceful night and lie in!! Physio came round and showed me exercises to do before i left! Some discomfort later when the nerves etc reconnect but those are just twinges.

Best of luck!!

Hello Ladies

Thank you all so much for all your well wishes and messages it really put my mind to rest.

The operation went ok they took more lymph nodes than they originally said they would, witch left me with a drip until monday. The only annoying thing is having to sleep on my back as i always sleep on my side lol. I have meeting on the 26th to discuss whats next.

Hope you are all doing well

Thanks again for your messages,

thats what i hated…sleeping on my back,i usually sleep on my front!but i was able to start sleeping on my side about a week after the op.
