Ovary removal - any advise?
posted by sallyb

got to have my ovaries removed end of August - now getting cold feet. Not on any medication at the mo and feeling happy, normal and in control for the first in 2 years - really don’t want to go backwards. Could not take Tamoxafen any longer, packed it in in October, blood tests showed I had been through menapause so started Aromasin in January - then lo and behold came on - so came of it in Feb, meant to go back on it after the op AND I DON’T WANT TO - any one else feel like that? Beginning to at last lose weight as well!!

Ovary removal Hi Sallyb

My cancer was oestrogen positive and I had my ovaries removed in October 2001 when I was 36.

I had them removed laprascopically/keyhole as this procedure is less intrusive. I was back working full time within 1 week.

Following surgery I had a few hot flushes for a couple of months and i think that was it. I don’t remember suffering badly at all.

Personally, knowing what I know now about cancer and how it can progress, i would have them removed again. Its another bullet to fight off this disease for longer.

Good luck with what you decide.

Julie

Ovary removal Thanks Julie for that - have done a lot of talking anf thinking this weekend and have come to the same conclusion - it’s the right thing to do and I am sure I too, will be back to work within the week. Hope all goes well with you.

Ovaries Hi Sallyb

I too had my ovaries out. I’m ER & PR negative but carry the faulty BRCA1 gene that means I had a high risk of ovarian cancer. I too had keyhole surgery and was in very little discomfort after. I was in hospital for one night following the op, then working again after 3 days, although I work from home so much easier for me.

I’ve had hot flushes since chemo and they have got slightly worse since I had my ovaries out, but my GP is trying different things to help - there are alternatives to HRT, you just have to try to find something that suits you.

I had my op in March and feel absolutely 100% back to normal now. I haven’t put on any weight or had any other side effects. I too think I did absolutely the right thing - one less thing to worry about!

All the best,
Sue

Hi Sally

I too have chosen to have my ovaries out and will be going in at the end of July, Im told that you are only down for about 1 hour and that I can go home in the afternoon, Im a little jittery but I think that like the other girls say its one less thing to worry about.

Good luck
