Ovary Removal

Ovary Removal

Ovary Removal Hi all,

I’ve been asked to consider having my ovaries removed. I have mets so worrying about fertility isn’t an issue :frowning:

Has anyone here had the procedure and if so could you tell me more about it? How long were you in hospital and how was the recupperation? I’m trying to way up the pros and cons so any advice would be great.

Hey twinkle

Ive had mine removed- its an easy op after all the other treatment i had you can be in ans out the same day most women were…apart from i tend to throw up alot after ops so they kept me in an extra day.

I had them removed through my beely button i have no idea how to spell it but it was very simple and my stomach was sore for about 2 weeks then i felt better…the only down side it the menopause kicking in big time!!

If you need to know anything else just leave me a list of questions hun

Hello, Twinkle!

Like Lynn, I also had the ooph done laparoscopically. It’s general anaesthetic to knock you out, then they make four small incisions in a kite shape (one at the top of your knickers, one in your belly button, plus one on each side around where your ovaries are). They fill you with air to give them space to work in and it’s all over and done pretty quick. Morning ops usually go home in the late afternoon, I had mine done in the p.m. and was home the next day. You get a bit of a jelly belly for a couple of days afterwards, 'cause they pump some liquid into you before they sew you up (to help you heal faster or something like that). Some people get a bit of pain in the shoulder where the air disperses (!!!???!!!), but mainly it’s just a bit of discomfort around the abdomen for a few days. The stitches come out a week later and after about 10 days, I felt back to normal. But I have read of some women who were back in work the next day - hard as nails!!

And then the menopause kicks in… Job done!

Hope that helps, but feel free to ask more questions if you need to.

Hey Twinkle,

i am having treatment this week for a small operation on friday to collect my eggs for embryo freezing. i have to take a range of tablets and injections for 10 days to stimulate me to produce. since last week i have to go back 3 times for scans to see the development and they hope to collect eggs on friday. i start chemo next tuesday. Do you know what type of treatment you will have? I hate injections, so bad i fainted when i had my biopsy. i can honestly say that injecting myself has really not been that bad and is one way to overcome a fear of needles, i still don’t like them but i am more tolerable. Good luck with your treatment and if you want to ask any questions i happy to help if i can.

All the best

Thanks everyone for the replies. I’ve checked up on the web about the procedure but hearing first hand how it went helps.

As I’ve had my mets for 2 yrs I’ve been having zoladex so used to the menopausal symptoms, well as used to it as I can be.

I just need to decide whether I want to take time out to have the op, I think esp. with having mets makes you more reluctant to go into hospital but it doesn’t sound too bad a procedure so will ponder some more.

Nadia, I have bone, liver and lung mets so I’ve just finished having some chemo and will shortly start another hormonal - aromasin. Doing well at mo, chemo has done a good job. Good luck to you too.
