Painful Veins after 2 years post treatment

Hi all
Haven’t posted for a very long time, and am now nearly 2 years post treatment (chemo & rads), I remember one of the veins on my hand being especially bad at the end of my chemo and was on the verge of collapse, post treatment it seemed to recover fine, and all seemed OK, but in the past two weeks this particular vein is very pronounced and painful, it doesn’t seem to be getting any better, anyone else had problems like this after treatment has finished ?

Samdee I am only 4 weeks post chemo and my veins are very sore and painful. I have to start Herceptin this thursday and am worried about them injecting as they cannot use the other arm due to MX. I’m sorry to hear yours are playing up but pleased to hear that 2 years on you are well.

I had a nasty phlebitis after my last FEC which travelled up my forearm and round my elbow. That was in Feb this year and it still catches me sometimes with a sharp pain if I lean on it. There must be some loss of elasticity or scarring inside I’m going to ask Onc at my 1st check-up next week.

Thanks ladies for the feedback, have decided to go along and see my GP on Friday and see what he says about it, any useful bits of info I’ll post up, can’t believe I’m 2 years post treatment, tiredness is at last a thing of the past, but only just !! so pleased to have made it this far may lady luck continue to be on my side and all of yours, good wishes to you.

Not two years, but the vein used for my first chemo in Dec 09 is still black and painful.

I had my 2nd round of chemo today given by IV drip. Over the past few days I noticed that when I stretched my arm I’ve felt what I describe as a pulling feeling. I informed the nurse adminstering my drugs of what had been happening, so he decided to use a different vein.
Is that what happened to you at the time, was the IV put into a different vein or was the same vein used each time? Or am I taking about something completely different?
I can’t find anything information on this, do you have any ideas, would appreciate some advice.

Thanks

Lesley

HI Lesleyx, I remember that pulling feeling in my arm too, but that was further into my treatment than the 2nd round of chemo, and I think it was a differnt vein to the one that’s playing up at the moment. At the time I spoke to BC nurse for advice and decided to treat it with a warm wheatie bag, I got alot of relief from that so might be worth a go, and it did improve in time - I guess we are asking alot from our veins after all they meant to carry blood not chemicals so its not surprising that they complain is it I know that after 8 cycles of chemo my veins were running for cover!
Went to GP today to see what he thought about the vein playing up he reckoned it was unlikely to be chemo related and thought I might have nicked the vein whilst gardening, and as I’m a keen gardener it is possible even though I do wear gloves, he thinks it will settle but has given me some artritic gel (movelat) to put on to relieve the ache, so I’ll wait and see what happens over the next couple of weeks.
I wish you luck with your treatment, its a bit of a slog but worth it, its all a bit of a blur to me now, but I do know that I appreciate every day and all the lovely people and things around me even more than I did before.
