I have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, aged 43. I have no history of breast cancer on my Mother’s side but my Dad’s sister died of breast cancer. I am not sure how old she was, but I think she was in her late 40’s. When I had a lump checked out several years ago (which turned out to be nothing), I was told it did not count, as it was on my Father’s side. However, I have noticed that the Surgeon and nurses seem to be more interested when I mention it now, even before I was diagnosed. Has anyone else got a similar history? I would be interested to know.
I have just had a lumpectomy and am 37. From what I know, the genetics risk is meant to be really low. I am going to be looking into this too as my nan (on my father’s side) died when he was only 14 years old following a double mastectomy. My other nan (on my mother’s side) also had breast cancer at the age of around 40/50 years old, was treated and went on to live until 83 when she died having had senile dementia, but they also found she had breast cancer again. I have an 8 year old daughter and so am very interested to get this looked into.
It’s very scary I know going through all this. I had surgery a week and a half ago and I was the youngest by far in the ward. I need more surgery in just over a weeks time as they have also found DCIS and need more clear tissue.
Hi, I’m waiting for my genetic results to come back. It’s my father’s side which is being looked at as my Gran died of ovarian cancer (at 69) and her sister died of breast cancer in (I think) her 70’s.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my 40’s.
I asked to be referred to a genetics clinic (I have a daughter) and as my bc was diagnosed before the menopause they are now giving my sister early mammograms. We have both been offered ovarian screening too. All this before I have my results back and the geneticist says she’s not expecting a BRCA 1 or 2 result.
Best Wishes…x
Thanks for your comments. It may not be relevant, but it would be interesting to find out more info in respect of links on the Father’s side. I am going to try and find out exactly how old my Aunt was, as I suspect she may have been my age when first diagnosed. My Father is no longer alive and my Mum can’t remember my Aunt’s age when she died, but I know she was in her 40’s. I don’t have children, but I do have 3 sisters and several nieces. My sisters are all over 50, so are screened. I don’t want to panic them, but I think it is as well to be aware. Also, my Sister-in-law’s Mother had breast cancer, so two of my nieces now have it on both sides of the family.
Hi,
I was tested yesterday as the link is on my fathers side. His mother died aged 46 from BC, Her mother died of cancer although we do not know what sort or what age. His mothers 1st cousin died in her 30s of BC. My dad is an only child and fit and healthy, but if the gene has passed down then there is a 50 % chance that me or my sister carry it and a 50% chance that we have passed it on to our children
Katyx
I am a BRACA 2 carrier which was passed onto me by my father, My father had pancreatic cancer and I also had a male cousin that had breast cancer.
I had breast cancer in 2001 which was found in my yearly genetic check up. The cancer had already spread to my lymph nodes, as I was having yearly checks and mammograms I feel very lucky to be here. If I had waited for my NHS 50+ mammogram I really don’t think I would be writing this.
I was tested and am BRCA2. My older sister, mother and grandmother all have had breast cancer. We did not know what type of cancer my Grandmother had, until the 3 of us were diagnosed within 3 years of each other, and we sent off for a copy of her death certificate. My Mum was 66 when diagnosed, my sister 42, and me 40. My younger sister has been offered genetic testing, but has declined, she has annual mammograms, although has had a baby recently, so has to wait until stops breast feeding.
My sister and I had our ovaries removed, as we have increased risk of ovarian cancers too.
I am 32 and at high risk of breast cancer after my mum diagnosed aged 52 and two of her sisters passed away in their 40’s due to bc. My mum’s brother had myeloma and and my gran passed away just before Christmas from bowel cancer (although her cancer is not connected to the bc).
My mum and I are under Addenbrooke’s genetics clinic who determined our faulty gene (as yet unidentified) was passed down from my granddad who’s mum passed away in her early 40’s from bowel cancer. There is also a history of prostate cancer on my grandad’s side of the family.
I will start screening in 3 years time which will be 5 years before my youngest aunt was diagnosed.
I posted on this site previously as Molly.
If I can give any advice at all please let me know
I have just been diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene - I did not know of any cancer history until I found out that my father had this gene and that there was a 50% chance of me having it too. I do have it and now have been told that my chances of breast cancer is 85% and ovarian, 45%. I have 13 month-old twins but in a way it is lucky that they are boys. Like you, I always assumed that such cancers only went down the female side but of course, I’m wrong. I am new to this website and hope that I can learn something from all of you.
My mother had bc at 32 and died at 55. The genetic link has been traced to her father who died from cancer. One of his sisters died in her 40s.Out of 13 children 10 have died from cancer they all lived in the wake of Cellafield the power station in Cumbria. My chances of getting bc are between 50-80%.I would like more family but which comes first?treatment?
Would love to hear from anyone who feels as confused as me
