Hi, in October 2025 I had a skin sparing mastectomy and reconstruction. My surgeon decided to give me a permanent expansion implant so I have the port under my skin and tube into the implant. As it’s just over 6 months since my operation he is going to remove the port and tube under general anaesthetic.
I have been told not to lift anything after the operation for 3/4 weeks after the operation. But will I be able to go back to work (desk work) a few days after the removal and will I need to wear a post surgery bra again? I can’t find any information on the internet about this procedure or anyone else who has this type of implant. Any advice gratefully received, as my own BC nurse team who are amazing have never seen this type of implant before. thank you
I also have a permanent expander implant. I’m behind you in that I had my op in March. It’s true most expander implants seem to be temporary so hard to find many people who’ve had them.
Glad I’m not on my own LOL I will update you on how I get on so you get an idea when you have your port removed. Hope your doing well X
Thank you and yes I’m going on OK x
Hi @roses4,
Thanks for posting.
It’s understandable that you’d like some advice about recovery after having the tube and port removed from your tissue expander implant, especially as you’ve been unable to find information online.
As you say, there isn’t any guidance on this procedure specifically online, so it’s important to discuss recovery with your surgeon or breast care nurse, so they can advise based on your individual situation.
Although you have been told not to lift anything for 3 to 4 weeks following surgery, it is usually considered ok to return to work as soon as you feel able to do so. Some people find it can take a few days or more to feel recovered from a general anaesthetic and you may find you feel tired more quickly.
Your breast care nurse will be able to advise you on about wearing a bra after surgery. You may find it more comfortable to wear your post-op bra, but this will depend on where the scar from this procedure is placed as you will want to avoid any rubbing on the area while it is healing.
You may find it helpful to post your question in this section of the forum, to ask for other people’s experiences of having a port removed.
