Petrified of mastectomy

Hi Sue9
I’ve been chatting with a work colleague this morning - she had similar but bigger op than I’m having (had other breast reduced at same time) & had same surgeon as me. She was singing her praises which was reassuring.
I just want it done & dusted now - I was diagnosed in July 24 & had 12 rounds of chemo which ended on 3/1/25 - I’m feeling weary. I have to have radiotherapy after surgery & continue on phesgo injections for several months & 6 monthly zometa infusions so it’ll have been quite a journey!
As you say we have to be strong & get next Tuesday over & done with - for me that’ll be such a relief  Let me know how you get on, best wishes :people_hugging::people_hugging:

Oh my gosh, you’ve already been through a horrendous time. I’m so sorry. I was diagnosed on 23rd December, and having received all results… biopsies, ct scan etc… I am having the operation first, then treatment to follow dependent on pathology results. From what I understand, it was the HER2 result that dictated chemo or operation first. It is a learning curve.
I will let you know, can you also let me know how you are… I will be thinking of you on Tuesday. :hugs:X

Yes I’m Her2+ hence chemo first - especially as got lymph node involvement as well. It’s definitely been a steep learning curve! I’ll keep you updated after my op - hoping for smooth recovery for us both & everyone else going through surgery :people_hugging:

Hi @elsa771 Am doing OK thanks, very painful last night, but medication kicking in. Surgery went well I think! Just about to start on my shoulder exercises.
Gosh, you’re already home? Take it easy. I hope you feel reasonably OK. X

Morning! Glad you’re through the surgery ok. My surgery went ok too - took about 3.5 hours. I didn’t sleep much at all - felt like I’d had steroids in the anaesthetic mix maybe.
I’m achey/tight feeling on surgery side - done my exercises & had tea & cereal. Muscles have loosened up a bit now :crossed_fingers:Doubt I’ll be moving further than the toilet today! I had a heparin injection before I came home last night & I’ve to keep my compression socks on today. I was due my phesgo injection tomorrow afternoon but I’ve rung & postponed it - it’s quite a drive away & barring a miraculous recovery in next 24 hrs I doubt I’ll be fit enough.
Are you staying in hospital 2 or 3 nights? They’ll look after you well I’m sure. My hospital were keen to get me home last night - as soon as my obs were more or less normal they signed me out. I wouldn’t have minded a night in but would have been transferred to a very busy ward which I didn’t fancy. Keep me posted on your recovery - we’ll get well together :crossed_fingers::two_hearts:

@elsa771 Oh my gosh, they discharged you on the same day? I hope you’re still feeling reasonably OK.
I am in hospital until Friday, the surgeon just popped into see me and I think it’s because I live quite a long way from here, takes about a hour and a half. I also have a drain which I have to learn to empty etc as I will still have it when I go home.
Luckily it is a very quiet ward.
Rest now and we’ll come through this together. Xx

I felt it was a bit too early too but only live 20 minutes away from hospital so not far to travel. I’m tender now but paracetamol is easing it. I’ve had a dizzy spell going to the bathroom & had to sit down for a few minutes but otherwise just feel tired. Glad you’re in a quiet ward, you’ll be able to relax & get your strength back. As everyone says the anticipation is much worse than the actual surgery - so glad we’re both on the right side now :+1: x

I was the same, I had my op on a Friday afternoon and was home and in bed by 730! I had drains etc and no contact from any medical person until the following weds. This was 3 weeks ago.

Hi, how’s your recovery been? I haven’t got a drain so a bit easier for me. I felt I was discharged a bit too early - my heart rate was over 100 so I had to drink lots of water - as soon as it came down to the 90’s they were quick to get me home. Good to be back in my own bed but been wobbly! Take care :crossed_fingers:

I’ve been ok, not much pain but struggled to sleep for a week after op as heartbeat was racing. Dr gave me sleeping tablets. Apart from that i nearly have full movement back and I’m driving again, going out for meals etc

I honestly think everyone should stay in for one night. I had mine on a Friday afternoon. Luckily I was ok but if not then there was no one to call over the weekend, only 111. The aftercare has been v low key, the bcn said call us if you need us!

You’re doing well with your recovery :+1: I hope I perk up soon. I agree that an overnight stay should be the norm - especially as you say there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of monitoring in the days following the op. I too have been told to ring BCN if any problems- I’ve only seen her twice since last July! :people_hugging:
