phased return

hi
I am hoping to go back to work soon and my phased return means I only get paid for the days I work, so I will use my holidays up that are owed(25)before April.

Hi Jane,
I work for Social Services and have had several phased returns in the last 8 + years, thanks to my initial treatment and then several reconstructive surgeries.

All have been with full pay, even when starting back at just 10 hours per week, then 15, then 20 and gradually building up to full time (37 hours.)

I consider myself extremely lucky to have such a supportive employer but am aware that not all are the same, unfortunately.

Depends on your company. I work for education and am presently on full pay for 6 months (calculated on how much sick you have had in the passed year), I will then go onto half pay and SSP. If my phased returned is within the 6 months it is full pay; if it carries over the 6 month then the phased return will be half pay with SSP. You need to talk to your HR department to find out what you are entitled to.

hi norberte
i work for initial washrooms, part of the rentokil group, so they are a big company, who do everything by the book. we dont have a union, but to be fair i think i will be ok using up my hols, we are not allowed to carry them over. i have just had my esa stopped so work are going to pay me some of my holiday pay to see me through over xmas which is something they wouldnt usually do.will look forward to a stress free xmas then conquer work in the new year lol

I thought there had been a clarification of case law recently, so now you’re entitled to holiday which has been accrued while you’ve been off sick? Certainly my company quoted that when I asked whether I had any annual leave entitlement - so they offered to pay me for some of it and carry some of it over into the next year.

I’ve read this thread with shock, but all the same not surprised, if that makes sense?!

In the run up to my diagnosis (18 months ago) i reached a decision to leave a senior teaching job where I had been incredibly unhappy for a variety of reasons. It was a huge decision and I had plans to work on a freelance basis (as I had ten years previously).
ANyway, in the week I left I got diagnosis of BC (having been cleared several times before) SO i ended up unemployed (unable to take on freelance work) and ill for a several months as I had dreadful reactions to the chemo.

Despite the huge financial strain this cause me and my family (ESA etc) I was so glad not to have the stress of negotiating with my old workplace about time off. I was really lucky to pick up a little work in Feb and as it was a few days spread over several months was lucky to build up my confidence slowly as I finished the treatment (mastectomy / radiotherapy) Even more amazing I got a one year job which began pt and now I’m full time. It’s helpful to read of the exhaustion others are experiencing, I can relate to this.
I am amazed at how awful these people’s employers have been, sadly though I suspect this particularly the case in schools. Good luck to people and, take heart, if you do decide to change your work patterns due to BC it could be a good move, in the end…I don’t regret for a moment my move away from education and feel glad that despite the tough year we had it was well worth the struggle not to have to return to a work place which would have been as un sympathetic as all the ones I’ve been reading about. Good luck everyone
