PICC and Pain

Hi everyone

Hope you are all doing well

My had her PICC fitted on 19th May and she had her second chemo done on 21st May.

She is doing fine and the lump has shrunk even more.

However where the PICC is, she has pain sometimes but goes away or gets better after taking paracetamol. This is what they have advised to do. Has anyone else experienced anything similar

I had pain/discomfort for up to 2 weeks following the PICC insertion. If it was me I would give the helpline a call as there may be an issue that needs investigating. Possible infection, allergy with dressing or it could need a bit of added padding so not to cause pressure.

Ok thank you
I will see how mum is feeling and give call
Thanks for the tip

Is there anything I could do apart from paracetamol that might help

Im not medically trained so have no idea, it would all depend why it’s hurting.

My experience was intermittent discomfort and pain around my PICC for 3 to 4 weeks. My skin was also very sensitive to the PICC rubbing against it. The chemo nurses use to put a little padding of gauze between the PICC and my skin and make sure it was taped down in a different place each time. That helped a lot.
Having said that if the PICC is red or oozy then get it checked straight away as it could be an infection. Even if there is no sign of infection I would get it checked if you are concerned. The nurses reassured me that’s what they are there for. They said they would rather check something than a patient wait until they were certain something was wrong.
