PICC Line...again!

Ok, sorry to keep moaning about this but is it normal for the arm to hur so much…it feels like something is pulling in my arm at times and also as if something is pressing down on my arm… I am getting the thing flushed out tomorrow but I am getting so down with having this in…it is reducing me to tears nearly everyday. I hope someone out there has the answer of how to live with this…I can’t see myself keeping it for the next two months!

Mine didn’t feel like this - the pain was in my shoulder but if it is reducing you to tears it sounds as if something might be wrong. Can you ask the person who is flushing it tomorrow? Or you could try to ring the BCC helpline tomorrow. Is your hand and/or arm swollen? Mine got very swollen. Have you got any sign of an infection eg high temperature?

I am having a central line put in tomorrow - dreading it after my PICC experience, but surely something has to go right for a change?

All the best. I hope you can get this sorted out.

Anne

Hi. Have you got any redness in your arm? Mine went red from the incision point and they said it was infected and it was what they call “tracking” up my arm, and it was sore when I moved. I think it may be a good idea to either ring your GP or go to your Accident and Emergency Dept just to be sure and get checked out and you sound like its really hurting, and at least they can put your mind at rest. Hope you get it sorted out. Take Care

Babyboo

No words of wisdom from a personal point of view as I dont have one. Just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you and hope you get it sorted soon. From a professional point of view (nurse) it should not continuously be a problem so I would have it looked at by the experts.

Anne - again from a personal point of view good luck for 2moz. From a professional point of view central lines are much better than picc lines - just have to be very careful for infection as the lines going right into centre of your body!

Thinking of you all and hoping my veins stand up good !!

Cyber hugs to all

Hi Babyboo

Is your PICC line very recent? I had a similar problem soon after mine was inserted and I was told it was called Mechanical Phlebitis, basically your vein reacting to having a foreign body shoved in it. Mine settled down after anti biotics but was very painful for a few days.

Wendy…you hit the nail on the head! That is just what they said…I had it checked out this morning and cleaned out and everything. I t is new…only had it put in a week ago so not as worried now…funny how the slightest pain worries me now!

Fiona, Thank you for thinking about me. Nice to know someone out there cares…

Glad to hear you feel better about it babyboo and have been reassured

Plenty people out here care - its amazing how you heart goes out to everyone on here - people we have never even spoke to in person but know exactly what they are going through - and you know people are caring back.
