Pilot event - Living with secondary breast cancer as a younger woman

Breast Cancer Care is organising a two day residential event for younger women living with secondary breast cancer.

This pilot event is taking place in central London on the 24th and 25th October 2014 and will bring together around 30 women aged 45 or under who have been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. It’s a chance for you to share experiences with other women in a similar position and gain information and support that will be useful now and in the future.

As well as whole-group sessions you’ll be able to choose a number of break-out groups led by experts and specialists. Topics include current research and trials, managing and living with side effects, sexuality and intimacy, palliative care and sessions where you can explore the impact a life-limiting diagnosis has had on different areas of your life. All the information is tailored for younger women with secondary breast cancer and you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.

We expect demand for places to be high so to book your place so if you would like more information either call 0345 077 1893or email youngerwomen@breastcancercare.org.uk

Best wishes

I’m interested why this is capped at 45 - I feel like I’m missing out. I appreciate a cut off needs to be placed somewhere but could you expand on why the cut off is here?

Thank you

Hi Chocolates
I will pass your comments on to the services team in the morning

Hi,yes,I was wondering why 45 . I don’t class myself as old being 48 as I’m not even old enough to be in screening programme.
Hopefully this will be a success and perhaps something up north could happen.

Hello

Thank you for your comments and questions.

All our younger women together events have the age range of 20-45 as an age bracket. It is something that we are very conscious of and regularly review. We know that being diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age can be a particularly isolating experience as many women in their 20’s and 30’s tell us they won’t come across anyone of a similar age during their treatment. Our Younger Women’s services are funded primarily through the Lavender Trust and initially the events were set up to support women under the age of 40, this was later extended to 45 and will continue to be reviewed. This pilot event was specifically designed in consultation with a group of younger women with secondary breast cancer, to give women (aged up to 45) the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation and talk about subjects that matter to them in a setting where they feel comfortable and not like the odd one out. Because it is a pilot service we will evaluate all feedback and outcomes and will definitely take into account feedback from participants and others about the need for such a service and the age bracket currently specified.

However,we do appreciate that many of the topics covered are relevant to all ages of women with secondary breast cancer and Breast Cancer Care also run Living with Secondary Breast Care in 15 locations throughout the UK where we also cover a lot of these relevant topics. This service is for women of all ages and gives people living with a diagnosis of secondary breast cancer the chance to meet, chat and increase their knowledge. The meetings are once a month for a couple of hours and every other month, the session includes lunch and a guest expert speaker on a subject such as fatigue, benefits and side effects.
