Pinkwatch

I’m someone who doesn’t generally like Pink October, particulrly not the worst excesses of pink consumerism and happy survivor stories.

This year though with October nearly upon us I think I’ve detected slightly less pink fluff, slightly more seriousness. I’ve read artticles in Take a Break, Good Housekeeping, EasyLiving and they are more ‘serious’, more factual, less full of ‘breast cancer was absolutely the best thing to happen to me’ stuiff which I have read in past years. Women with secondaries occasionally get a mention too.

Just starting this thread for anyone to post anything about this years events…articles, fund raising etc…the good, the bad, the trite, the profound…whatever.

I’ve written one critical essay on my website and will be follwoing it up with others…but I want what I say to really reflect what’s out there…I’ll criticise the tat, but celebrate the useful.

Is pink October getting less fluffy or am I just getting used to it??

Jane

Yes I think what I read this year was better than before, so maybe I should write congratulating them so they are encouraged to keep it up next year. I’ve only read good housekeeping and woman and home tho

I’ve just been approached by Cancer Research for a photo-shoot and it’s been heartening to know that they want a story from someone with advanced cancer.

I feel this is my opportunity to let people know that we do exist and are getting larger in number, that we (for the most part) can live well for a number of years with our diagnosis and that it’s not necessarily a death sentence within months of being rediagnosed.

Not sure whether it’s getting less fluffy Jane or whether you’re getting used to it! It doesn’t really bother me the ‘pink’ bit it’s sometimes some of the dialogue that’s used and not taking into account that for some people they go on to develop advanced cancer

I havent read any articles as i don’t tend to buy magazines, to me they just gloss over things and sensationalise everything to sell them. However as i have posted in another thread on here give me the free asda mag anytime.

think your getting used to it Jane!!!

I had the most odd thought today in asda, the tickled pink stuff isnt placed far from the halloween stuff. Maybe they should put them together as this disease is monsterous and evil and darn grotesque.

Sorry, but i have had one ‘crap’ week with so many friends suffering and dying from this disease.
I have no probs with fund raising but partying etc, i just dont feel like.

You tickled me pink, liverbird. Considering pink stuff along with halloween, yes I see where you are coming from, both weird. Jane I think pink October may becoming a lot more black as there is a lot of black tickled pink stuff too. e.g betty boop etc. still I like the fact they are raising money for breast cancer.
