Does anyone know of a reliable source e.g. a directory of some sort of information on what does/doesn’t contain soya or plant oestrogens. I have been prescribed a calcium supplement as a preventive measure whilst taking Arimidex but I have just noticed a remark on the outer container saying “contains soy oil”.
My GP warned me off phyto oestrogens when I was desperately (unsuccessfully) seeking a herbal remedy for hot flushes. When I found an Australian bush flower essence I ended up writing to the “manufacturer” to get a statement that it did not contain plant oestrogens but it’s impractical to found out in such a way.
Sorry I dont have the answer to your question but there a few of us er+ girls out there getting mixed answers from GPs and oncologists about the whole soya and phyto eostrogens issue so I will be keeping a very interested eye on this thread. I actually caved in today and bought a couple of books on the net one of whichI am hoping will tell me everything I need to know as the title is Help prevent breast cancer:nutrition I can live with (tell me what I can eat) and I thought that just about covered how I am feeling about food at the minute.
I tried rice milk today in coffee (not good but its ok on cereal) due to the diary and cows eostrogen issue. I think i may be becoming obsesive (a case of one hormone too far!!! LOL) I and er+ and pr+ and pre menopausal so expecting tamoxofin.By the way did the Australian Bush flower come back to you and does it work. Its the girl guide in me trying to be prepared.
Yes, they came back and confirmed that Mulla Mulla does not contain plant oestrogens. It is nearly £10 a bottle and I tested it in hot Utah last year, can’t say I noticed much difference to be honest. I take Clonidine for the hotties and an oil capsule every day which contains starflower oil, evening primrose oil and one or two others and I have noticed that lately the hotties don’t hit me hard till evening but I do seem to go through short phases (3 or 4 weeks) when they diminish.
I find conflicting advice worse than none at all.
P.S. I was in the Girl Guides too, in the “olden days”!
I lost this threadand have just come across it again and just want to say sthanks for getting back to me. I am 3 weeks into the tamoxifen and so far so good. Cant tell if the times I get a bit warm are due to the heating being on or this lovely sunshine but as yet no frantic rushes to stick my head in the fridge!!!
I will be starting on Zoladex too soon so hopefully that wont be too bad either.
Have some to the conclusion soya ispretty difficult to avoid so seem to have taken on your frame of mind and avoiding nutrition advice as much as possible trying to cut back on dairy as much as possible, sugars and processed foods basically a balnced diet and so far so good. Even managing to lose a bit of weight too. Ironically probably healthier now than I have been since I was a guide!!!
I am not a BC sufferer although I have had a couple of scares. Reference Soya - I started drinking soya milk instead of cow’s milk as I thought it would be good for me and I got the most dreadful burning, tingling and pulling sensation in my breasts. Went to the GP who said she could find nothing wrong but to stop the soya milk immediately because of the hormone connection - I stopped it and the problem cleared up. So, obviously, it does have some affect.
Try almond milk, lovely on ceareal & in coffee! I have also been trying to avoid soya, having initially changed form cows milk to soya… its s minefiled isnt it!?
