Please help...

I have finished all my treatment, got the all clear last week which i am so grateful for, however now I need to get myself back on track.
My periods have come back, hot flushes have stopped. Hair is returning… Now there is the problem. I have pubic hair on my head. Thick and tight curls. I have been using every de frizz product in sight… Daily for three month now. Will it go straight again
Another prob is that I am two stone heavier. My consultant it will take longer to
Lose this… Is that true. I am running and using the gum when I’m not walking three dogs daily for 1.5 hrs. I’m at work full time… Took one month off at end of treatment to get my very fuzzy head around life but feel
I’m getting back to normal. Have an extremely busy job, home life etc
I need help to get my hair straight without making me cry ( I’ve tried straightening it but then I look like cleo rocco) or my nan… Bless her.
I need help to lose weight quicker than 1 pound every three weeks.

Please inspire me with your stories and advice…
I really appreciate it

Hi there

I totally sympathise with your hair situation, i really do.
Was your hair curly before it went?
Mine was you see, so it was no surprise when it returned curly. However, long curly hair was lovely, short curly hair is a different matter…

Well, i went to the hairdreser in desperation, it was about 3.5 inches long. She took off the ends for me and recommended ATER PARTY by TIGI, it is a smoothing cream, about £15 and you can use it on wet or dry hair. It did help and smells divine!

I think over time, as your hair gets longer, the curl will drop out, but it does take time. I know when you are desperate for your old hair back , waiting seems like a life time away…
John Frieda shamppo for curly hair is a favourite of mine too, as it seems to at least tame the curls a bit.

Have you got mini straighteners? Are you able to straighten the front and then smooth it down with a product?

As for the weight, i find restricting carbs is good for weight loss…especially after about 5pm.

Good luck with everything, you will get there with the hair for sure…

Hi Van, I really get where you are coming from.

I can’t comment on your hair, however I too hated the weight gain!!!

I put on 2.5 stone on chemo, and initially struggled to get it off. a freind suggested that I go to Slimming World with her (essentially a very low fat diet). I did so, and I am absolutely delighted, I have lost 7.5 lbs in 4 weeks, and I haven’t been that strict. love the diet, which is more like a healthy lifestyle with food rather than a diet. My family love it too.

we are eating so much more fruit and veg, and i am feeling healthier too.

I really wish you well Van,
Love Jenny x

I put on 2 stones with chemo followed by a knee fracture[dont ask!!].I then just sat about for ages till I took myself in hand, went to an ‘exercise on prescription’ group and joined Weight Watchers in Feb last year.I have now lost just over 3 stones and find the WW diet very easy.As for hair…mine was originally dark/greying and curly and grew back grey all over and straight!!The colour I like[I will be 67 this month] and a slight wave has come back.

hiya, my hair has come back thicker and wavey not tight curls thank god but it was grey and at 45 i wasnt ready for that so dye it brown, i hate it short cos used to long hair but its better than none, i put wello over 2st on with treatment and as soon as i finished in nov i joined slimming world after 6 weeks i had lost over a stone and then i went on hol and had xmas then got cracking again, even though they say u gain with tamoxifen ive continued to eat healthy and lots of food and have lost nearly 2st now and feeling much better

My hair was very long, dark, thick and wavy, and it quickly came back very thick and curly…and white! I was so grateful to have hair I thought it was great! I was thinking of keeping it short and white but it grew so quickly and soon returned to its pre chemo colour. The more I tried to straighten it the frizzier it looked but I did find mousse invaluable at keeping it under control. I was always in the hairdressers fighting it until I gave up and let it grow. It was back long again in no time. Nasreen is right the longer it gets the less curl and frizz there is.
About losing weight - I found walking a great way of shedding it. I also went dairy free and find that I feel well and have no problem keeping slim. Good luck

Hi Van, this time last christmas (2009) I had short curly (grey/white) hair ! Not a look I was happy with ! Dyed it really quickly with a natural vegetable dye called naturtint ! As for the curls, I am afraid you just have to let it grow out - smoothing products helped and a little styling oil. As soon as there was some weight to my hair it started to straighten altho I do straighten it as well - when left to dry naturally I now just have a slight wave to my hair. This is my hair now after 2/3 hair trims as well - You will get there! Dont despair. Hope this helps x

Hi there - you know what I think we will get our bodies back eventually, if a little altered! I am 6 months post chemo and look like a brill cream advert -just have to do something to keep the hair flat otherwise its vertical and curly - Van you made me laugh saying pubic hair on your head cos thats what I look like!
kaz36 you have inspired me so much - I am a stone overweight and still so tired its hard to exercise, I envy you busy bees - but I have started out on eating less and drinking less and did loose a pound last week!
Van, you know what if you are losing some weight thats great , even if its a bit slow - as my GP said rather harshly I thought but guess she’s right " you know what to do Nicola, eat less and move more; I can’t tell you in what proportions, you just have to find that out for yourself"! Yikes, but guess she’s right. I might try the pool on thursday, first time since MX,
best Nicola

hi please note i am new to this computer lark, just stated doing this today. my hair came back very curly, which unlike you i loved. however i was told that after a while it would return to normal (streight in my case) this is exactly what happened my hair is now the way it was before chemo. there are some great serums out there for friz hope you find the right one for you.

Hi Van and everyone else

Pubic hair on head or a head that looked like a microphone oh lord tell me, everyone is different but mine too a year post finishing treatment to grow out and be cut off. Though i didn’t help mine last year by bleaching it, dying it and having racoon hair extentions ( which i wouldn;t recommend) it is finally straight now. I put on 3 stone and have really struggled to lose any, I did just before christmas lose almost a stone but it crept back on so I too join slimming world and though i hate to say it as i so fought not to agree to join a group thing, i am now starting to lose some ( 8lbs so far in almost 3 weeks)

Hi Rhian

Just picked up somewhere in your post that you did not recommend racoon hair extensions - why is that?
I only ask because i was so near to having some put in, mainly out of desperation, as i hated my hair so much a couple of months ago.

Whoops…might have misread…did you mean the bleaching and dying bit…?

Thank you all so much for your comments. I don’t feel so alone now. My hair is about two inches pulled straight out but one centimetre in a tight curl. I know I need to be patient. Was never any good at waiting.
Good day watching what I eat but didn’t get home till 7.30 tonight… Too tired for gym. Maybe Tom!

Thanks for the smiles x

Hi All,

I’ve not long lost nearly 2st with Slimming World so after being diagnosed & reading these threads, was mortified to learn about the weight gain monster. I still follow the whole SW ethos (basically healthy eating) & went back at work after 2 days rest from FEC 1 (hope rest of cycles are as kind with SE) so hopefully won’t gain much.
However, from another thread on this site I found a book called The Pink Ribbon Diet. It was devised by an American dietician & Professor who’s done many years research on this very topic. She found that trials using a Mediteranean diet gave better results than low fat or low carb ones. Her recipes are supposed to be veggy but she has included meat & fish for those who really can’t give them up.
Most of the recipes look really good & I do intend trying them but not sure whether to give her whole programme a go. I think I might be able to incorporate her basic principle within the SW plan but may change my mind if needs must!

Anyway, I’m sorry to have prattled on, I just wanted to share what I found in case it might suit or be worth a go by others.

Best wishes to all xx Chris xx
