I had pleural effusion last year and had pleurodesis done on both lungs. The pleurodesis has left me in a lot of discomfort and has failed as I have fluid build up around my right lung. I am waiting for an urgent appointment at interventional radiology to have a drain put in. I am feeling really panicky over not being able to breathe properly. Has anyone got any advice? Thanks for reading. Jane.x
Hi Jane, I have been in that situation of being unable to breathe properly. I had never experienced anything like it and was so scared. I was frightened to go asleep because I feared not waking up. I also had the paramedics out twice to me. If you are very worried you should ring somebody for help/advice. I don’t know if you have a help line at your hospital or not or you can ring 911. You don’t say why you have the pleural effusion. I was diagnosed with heart failure and also had pneumonitis and as a consequence struggled for my breath and as I say found it so scary. Do you have an oximeter? If you don’t it may be worth the investment as you can monitor your oxygen levels.
Not sure if that helps at all but wish you all the best. take care xx
Hi Jane,
Sorry to hear you are struggling. I had lots of pleural effusion last year. It really drags you down, and makes every physical activity difficult.
I didn’t have a pleurodesis, and had my lung drained a couple of times, taking 2 litres off one lung. Luckily it hasn’t built up to that level since.
I did see a respiratory physio via my local hospice, who gave me some helpful advice. You may already have that support in place. If not might be worth asking via your oncologist or breast care nurse.
I’m really sorry you’re struggling but hope things improve with a drain in place and you can get back to a more active life.
Take care,
Nicola
