Hi footie18,
Mine was very quick to insert (and I love it) but they were running late due to another emergency so there was a lot of waiting around beforehand. With any luck if you’re the first of the day you won’t get that. Also they’ll want you to stay a while after to check you’re ok. I would definitely phone the hospital to ask how long they think. Is there anyone who can pick you up afterwards? You might not feel like getting on a train. Good luck, I think you will find it so much easier and better than the picc

I’m having a portocath fitted 4 days before I am due to start radiation? Does anyone know if that will be ok? Does having a portocath fitted effect radiotherapy? I am trying to time all my appointments and having a hard job getting them in the right order as my Kadcyla and radiotherapy will start at the same time.

No, you’re absolutely fine. I had my portacath fitted over a year ago and it’s still in for my bone infusions. I had radiotherapy with it in. It was even fine when I had to have an MRI. Good luck!
Thank you @sarahc_123 thats a relief! I had visions of me having to try and rearrange all my appointments again. Pleased I will be ok.

I had my portocath fitted yesterday and was a lot more invasive than I had anticipated! Hated the local anaesthetic part but didn’t feel any pain during the procedure. I was in a lot of pain sleeping last night and it’s been very uncomfortable: tender, painful at sight. Also feels very tight and that I can’t really move my neck and head upwards properly. Is this all normal?! I wasn’t expecting to feel all this discomfort. Driving is painful and I’m using a small cushion to help with this. Hopeful all this is temporary and it’s just my body adjusting to having it in. I’m a very active person and don’t want this getting in my way! If this is how it’s going to be I would prefer to be cannulated! Ha ha.
Hi, sorry to hear it’s giving you grief! I would rest up, take paracetamol and give it a couple of days to see if it starts improving. If there is any sign of infection (swelling, pus, fever etc) get in touch with your team asap. Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Btw, I’m as active as I have energy for (varies per day) and my port has never had any impact so hopefully that’s one less thing for you to worry about once it’s properly healed x
