My mum had a bi-lateral mastectomy about a fortnight ago, and she goes back for her follow up appointment next week, and i was wondering how likely it is that she will have to have chemo? one breast had pre- cancerous cells, and the other was removed as a precaution, the cells were abnormal not cancerous, but i was just hoping to get a bit of a heads up on what to expect if anyone can help me out?
I’m certainly not an Oncologist so I don’t know if your mum will be advised to have chemo or not. But she certainly seems to have had pretty drastic treatment for pre-cancerous cells in one breast and non cancerous in the other breast. Make sure you ask lots of questions next week, it’s your mum’s body and her right to accept or reject treatment. Some surgeons & oncologists are leaving pre cancerous cells in the breast and not doing any treatment until they see if these cells progress or not.
Agree with Redders, I’ve not heard of anyone having chemo for pre-cancerous cells. Mastectomy sounds like precaution enough!
Hope the follow-up goes well, maybe write a list of questions to take to the appointment, I for one sometimes go completely blank when under stress (every time I’m in a hospital!)
