Has anyone had problems with nerve pain in the shoulders, arms, elbows and writsts? I completed my rads August 2009 and started getting severe pain by the following March. Was diagnosed with Tennis Elbow and sent for Physio. This hasn’t worked and is now affecting the other arm. Waiting for an appointment at the Pain Clinic now.
I wondered if anyone elsehas had similar problems? My BCN said it does happen in some cases.
I wouldn’t say I actually had pain but my shoulder and arm ach at times, my rads was under my arm, shoulder and a small part of my neck. I have a sensation of a lump in my throat been there for a couple of months or more now, went to my gp she treated me for acid reflux but its still there so being sent to throat specialist. I think its to do with the rads as nothing can be seen or felt, or maybe its Tamoxifen but what do I know.
25 years ago I had rads on opposite side and I did have a shooting pain down that side, worried me but I was told it was the nerve endings knitting together, it did ease over time.
I’m 5 years down the road and STILL get nerve pain in my breast and under arm. It’s not always there. I call it my Voodoo pain, as it is just like someone stabbing me with a large darning needle. The consultants advice was to rub it when it happens(not a good idea in front of my class or in public). However, been to the Haven and they have suggested St John’s Wort oil. It’s early days but it’s worth a try. St John’s Wort is commonly known as an antidepressant. So if it doesn’t work at least my boob will be happy!
Regards Chinook
P.S. Consultant also said not to worry about it, at least I was alive!!!
Hi I had rad in August 09 too. I developed tennis elbow in March10 but never related it to Rad as it was on the other side. I had a steroid injection in the elbow and it went away but came back again 9 months later so had another injection. I don’t know whether to ask GP if there could be a link. Maggie
i finished my radiotherapy in july last year (2010) and for the past couple of weeks i’ve been having severe pain in my arm and across my boob. I have just had my first mammogram results and everything is fine but im worrying about this pain, i cant even lay on my right side cos i’m in 2 much pain.
I was toldby dr that the radiotherapy could cause dadmage, do u think that is what the pain is?
i had radiotherapy everyday for over 3 weeks and had a boost on each one.
I havent been able to stretch my right arm up as much as the left one since i had my surgery but i kust want the pain to go away.
Hi girls,
Im another one who has suffered a lot with nerve pain after rads, like Dizzy mine finished summer 09 but I still have problems. My arm feels as though its constantly being squeezed,my MX scar is still very tight and my armpit feels as if there is a piece of splintered wood in it. Added to this, my shoulder blade feels as though its piercing the skin of my back BUT I feel great, just enjoy having a good moan occasionally, whoops, nearly forgot that I too have a very painful elbow but I thought it might be due to all the blow-waving I did in 40yrs hairdressing. The most successful tablet is Lyrica, AKA Pregabalin, if I ever run out Tramodol is a reasonable second. Last summer I broke the wrist of my good arm and had to do a lot more with my bad arm and it was so painful having to reach up for things, if I forget and lift my arm up too high the burning pain lasts for a couple of hours, cant really see an end to it, heyho, could be worse.
Good luck everyone, love Mags xx
I finished my rads in February and during my last week I had quite severe pain in my elbow. I have mentioned it twice to the onc but she couldn’t tell me what it was. The pain is still there but not quite as bad as it was. It’s not stopping me doing anything but I am worried that it could be something more sinister. It’s been a comfort to read these posts.
