Post treatment pain

Hi everyone, I have finished my treatment for grade 3 bc and had a lumpectomy in January. My chemo finished end of June and rads 3rd week in August. I had 3FEC 3Tax and 23 rads.
Thing is 3 months after chemo finished I lost my finger nails after I had managed to keep them long and strng throughtout treatment, they have now grown back just as good but I have intense pain in my finger and toe joints and I am on pain relief and anti inflam tablets but also pain in my left arm where it bends at the elbow. Had my first check up with oncologist and i have been sent for blood tests. First the doc sent me for some to rule out any arthritic probs so now the onc sent me for more blood tests and an xray for which I am waiting for results and I am waiting for a bone scan… I am trying not to worry but cant help it, you would think after this year I would have got used to waiting and being postive and I did but now why this pain, is it back…? I also have my first annual mamogram 6 Dec, the oncologist examined me and I do have a sort part of my breast that itches but is tender so has it re occurred, any advice very welcome Silvershar xxxx

xx thanks to you all xxxx

Oh I do wish i could give you some answers but i am suffering with aches and pains all over the place in fact so much so i have now been referred to a clinical psychologist as my BCN feels i am not coping. I finished chemo in August.Sorry i know thats no help at all but just wanted to let you know that i understand how awful and scary it is to have any new pains and areas of concern. Melx

Thank you Mel, I appreciate your reply and I am sorry for your pains too, you have helped me just by being there and I thank u very very much xxx

Its a pleasure - i just wish i could tell u it was all normal but i think i have totally lost sight of what is normal and what isn’t. I hope you find some answers soon, look after yourself - Melx

Hi Silvershar,
The waiting is always hard isn’t it. I finished chemo in February, My history is very similar to yours. My fingernails were pretty awful after chemo. I had a lot of pain particularly in my hands and feet having docetaxel, and it did last for months after. Now I have tingling and stiffness in my fingers but haven’t needed to take painkillers for them since the summer. It does affect people differently and I have heard others say that months after treatment they are still in terrible pain.
I hope this helps and I hope your results are good news. Big hug x

Thank you Blueyegirl I do appreciate your reply, so you had pain in hands and feet too? I have that plus pain in my left elbow, well not the actual elbow but the top of my arm where the elbow is… I am on pain relief as its quite bad espcecially first thing when i wake up, its scary, im thinking what if its backxxxx i thank u for ur reply very much xx

Hi Silversha, I have had ongoing joint pain in my neck, shoulder, ankles since chemo finished in March. My feet are terrible in the morning and I can hardly walk first thing. My neck is really bad most of the time. My onc keeps saying its due to the early menopause but it’s very worrying. I have tried all sorts of pain relief but most aren’t working. My boob/ shoulder area often feels like it is burning and the skin itches. I feel like an old woman a lot of the time. I’m seeing my oncologist next week so I’m going to be asking questions yet again x

Hey Loupylou- oh no poor u too, i send u lots of love support and total understanding, i feel worse now than when on chemo aches and pain wise i mean - not sick of burnt mouth but tired and old tho everyone i meet tells me how good and glowing i look thats nice but dont always feel it! I have xray and bone scan and blood test to see what cuase it. my onc says she dont think im pre menopausal i wish i was cos that would explain it tho dont like it im scard, as long as not c related i dont care, i felt so alone thinking am i the only one in pain cos everyone else is doin well, which i am glad of definetly but i am wondering what it is with me. i am working parttime and building up and am lucky with my OH family and friends they are fab and so are all of u, thank u xxxxxxxxxxxxlet me know how u get on, lots of love xx

Hi Silvershar

I like you feel worse after chemo than when was having it I coped quite well suffered mostly with mouth.
Since chemo finished Sept I have terrible back pains and this goes down my legs if I walk too far!! I went to GP and had blood tests and x ray and they were normal. He said it was just the after effects of chemo. Then 2 weeks ago started feeling really nauseous all day every day went to doc yesterday and I have water infection!!!

Last time I went to doc’s before all this started was 2006 I have more than made up for it this year feel like am never away!!!

I have onc appt 5th Dec will have lots of questions for him re these pains!!!

Hope you feel better soon and hope all goes well with scans xrays etc
