Pre chemo blood test

Hi All

I’m due to go to GP today at 10.30am for a blood test as I’m due to have my first lot of chemo on Monday. I forgot to ask though - is this a fasting or non-fasting blood test? I haven’t eaten since last night so that’s not a problem but the big question is can I have a cup of tea or do I have to wait until after the blood test? Advice gratefully received.

Hi HistoryGirl,

It’s non-fasting - get yourself a cuppa!

Good luck with your “newts”!

Thanks Annie!

Historygirl , have the full English with it…keep your strength up!!!
So glad things are happening at last for you

Hi Cackles

Yes, things are moving - but I’m having to kick all the way! The following is a vent, so if you’re not in the mood for a major moan look away now.

When the Chemo Dept moved my appt forward (after I’d complained to the Chief Exec) they told me I’d have to have a blood test today at my GP in time for my pre-chemo assessment tomorrow. When I booked the appt at the GP the receptionist was a bit iffy as I didn’t know what tests I needed. I rang the Chemo people again and was assured that a letter and form would be with me in time to take to the GP. Well, guess what … this morning arrived and no letter. So I spent half an hour on the phone repeatedly calling the Chemo people before I got through (with minutes to spare until I had to leave for the doc’s appt). All was well in the end, they gave me a list of tests over the phone which I took to the nurse at the GP who seemed completely on the ball.

I won’t tempt fate by asking if they can possibly find other ways to stress me out … but so far they are doing a good job of it!

Anyway back home to tea, malt loaf and diazepam. Food of the gods!

Hi Della

Buckle in for the rollercoaster ride!

Sometimes it’s good and the universe conspires to make everyone nice and do your bidding and sometimes you just have to deal with GP receptionists of the Iffy variety (Apologies to nice GP receptionists wherever you may be).

Mmmm malt loaf - haven’t had that for years. How are the pills going?

Hi Della,

So sorry that you have had yet another hitch! I found it easier to have the blood tests at the hospital the day before but lots of people seemed to have them at the hospital the same day as the chemo. I tried it through the doctors, which is quite far away from the hospital and belongs to a separate trust and it was a complete pain.

Hope you have had a nice cuppa and a chill.

I am always ready to listen to a moan from you. My shoulders are broad…A friend gave me a lovely plate which says
“Start every day with a smile…and get it over with”. It is from a cartoon in the Horse and Hound and refers to a “County Type”( sorry if I offend anybody ) and her relationship with her husband. I think it serves so many situations. I didn’t take too much offence at the gift because she gave one to three of us…and she moans too!

Your treatment has all been increadably stressful . I hope all changes with the start of the Swamp Juice. What chemo group are you posting on? I will look out for your progress. Hold on in there and take the anti sickness even if you feel ok for the first three days. Watch your bowels from day one…what a subject. The most important piece of advice is to drink ++++++ you will be very anxious with the first course but by number three you will be blasé
Get them to give you a labelled specimen form and bottles for your practice nurse or District Nurse ready for the next time.
I am off for a walk in an effort to lose weight and keep fit. It will also stop me delving in the larder .
Everything crossed for a smooth mride from now on

Hi Laurie, Jan and Cackles

Many thanks for the commiserations and advice.

Laurie - not had malt loaf for years? Ye gods woman, don’t you realise malt loaf is one of the major (and vital) food groups! Not sure if anxiety meds are working or not. I’m inclined to say not, but that said I don’t know what I’d be like if I wasn’t taking them (what a thought!)

Cackles - I’ll be moaning ooops sorry I mean posting on the March Chemo thread. Thanks for the bowels warning. I will be on my guard. I will also drink water like it’s sherry and take as many anti-sickness pills as poss.

Getting geared up now for tomorrow’s pre-chemo assessment, wig try-on and hair cut. Blimey, I haven’t got time for being ill!

Thanks all - you really do help you know and I might be a bit of a Flippant Freda at times but I do appreciate all the help I’ve had here.

Della

Della Good on you. I didn’t specify the drink…I found G&T Scotch&ginger and a spritzer palatable!!! As the late Ray or was it Roy Allan said “people ask me what am I drinking . Is it water.? Water…Water …would I be drinking water fishes swim in water and little boys pee in it”!!!

Della, you be as flippant and silly as you like, sometimes black humour and a heightened sense of the ridiculous is all that gets us through this nonsense. Good luck with the swamp juice.
