Pregnant post breast cancer mastectomy

Hi Ladies,

I had breast cancer 2 years ago. I had a bi-lateral mastectomy did not need any radiotherapy or chemo. I had reconstructive surgery afterwards - using implants, and then also had nipple reconstruction last year.

We began IVF treatment (genetic removal of cancer gene that I carry…as this was the 3rd cancer I have had - at the time aged 31) and are delighted that I am now 13 weeks pregnant. I know how lucky I am to be in this position - and I know there are so many women on here whos fertitly has been taken away by the bloody C!

I have been trying to find answers to any breast changes that I might experience on the internet but cannot find any answers. I assumed that no changes would take place - however, I have been suffering some symptoms experienced by those with ‘normal’ breasts including soreness, redness - looks inflamed on scarring, and tenderness/sensitivity.

I wondered if anyone has experienced pregnancy post reconstruction and could share their thoughts. I’m sure it must be that there is still some tissue there and perhaps my hormones are trying to make my breast do things they cant? Wasnt sure whether to alert/ speak to my breast care team.

Thanks ladies

I think the breast tissue can begin to grow back / swell during pregnancy, I have a friend for whom this is the case. We share the same oncologist who said the tissue can grow back as the body is aware its missing something.

Im not able to publicise it on here but there is a fantastic private facebook group for younger ladies and there is a dedicated fertility section and you would undoubtedly find several people who are in exactly the same position.

Feel free to PM me and I will give you details!

Good luck - I only completed active treatment 2 months ago but would love to be where you are in a year or two!!!
