Prescriptions

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice ( just reading the thread).

I have never thought of this! What a brilliant idea.

I didnt know steroids could induce diabetes. How come?

Hi Starfish
Well neither did I know the risks that we take with steroids. They increase sugar levels. A normal persons sugar level is approx 6. Mine were continuously at 29/30. 30 is dangerous, the body produces krestones that can induce coma and death. The pancreas produces insulin that breaks down sugar and carbohydrates when you eat. Steroids affect this system and eventually to compensate the body closes the system down and is unable to produce any insulin. So when you eat blood sugars are not broken down and continue to rise, thus the need to inject.
This is a new lay persons description but the gist of it is right.
I find it hard to believe that these things are given out willy-nilly as part of the package for cancer. When I was taken off them I felt no worse or better than before. In my treatment they were absolutely unneccesary. I have always been very careful about taking medicines but because it was the big C would have taken a bucket of arsenic if told!
If we started a thread on what steroids have caused I think the majority of us would also wonder why they are just handed out with no comment on possible side effects.
Starfish I am so , so angry, untreated diabetes makes you feel so terribly ill and of course I thought it was the chemo.
Now apart from cancer I am left with another disease that is life threatening if not treated properly.
Goodness I have needed to get this off my chest [singular]. I bet your sorry you asked.

My original prescription for Arimidex from my onc was 1 month and I had to go back to my GP for my next prescription. He was about to write me another for 1 month when I asked him for months on the basis I was going away for 3 weeks. He was reluctant and when I outright asked him whether it was because each month of Arimidex is £72 he said yes and then gave me my 3 months!!
Now I just send in my repeat request which automatically gives me another 3 months
