Problems eating and drinking three weeks post Radiotherapy

Hi ladies I am hoping someone can shed some light on a problem I’m having.I had x5 radiotherapy treatments to my back approx. 3weeks ago, was told that I could expect increased pain for a few weeks (that didn’t happen) however for the past 10 days I have started having the most horrendous feelings of indigestion and heartburn after eating or drinking anything it’s now to the point where I avoid eating and even sips of water feel like painful lumps of stone!
Rennies and omeprazole don’t help,if I knew that this was a part of the Radiotherapy side effects and would pass soon I could bear it but nobody in my medical team have helped so maybe someone on here can help.

Hi amber kitten,
No quite the same story as you but I had the same problems whilst on capecitabine. I was on it for 2 cycles, it gave me terrible digestive problems and didn’t work!
I couldn’t eat, had terrible ibs like symptoms and lost loads of weight! I tried following a basic diet for ibs and cut gluten and dairy for a while which did help a bit.
Have you tried smoothies? I put in some whey protein to give extra calories.
Have you tried Ranitidine? I get I as part of my pre-meds for chemo and it’s for reflux and indigestion. You can get tablets really cheap in places like home bargains , b&m home bargains! A shame your medical team aren’t being much help!
Good luck with and hope it soon passes!
Glo xx

I have also had dreadful heartburn, through chemo and I think one time from radiotherapy. Do ask for more help again amberkitten, you need to keep your strength up and your liquids. Have you tried your GP? Hope you get some relief from the symptoms. X

Hi hope you are feeling better. I had large dose of radiotherapy on thursday last week to mets in my lung. I was warned that due to the position there was a chance of severe indigestion, swallowing difficulty and pain due to possible narrowing of oesophegus. They suggested over the counter antacids but if these were not enough there is a medication available from the hospital ( oxetacaine) . Hope this helps  Kitty x
