Hi, I’ve had a Hickman Line in since my second chemo. About to go through my 7th (of 8) on Thursday and last night my line started stinging every time I moved in bed from one side to the other, or leaned over. The stinging pain is quite bad. Any idea what’s going on?
Hi Sue
I have spoken to one of our nurses here and she suggests that you contact your chemotherapy nurse who will be able to deal with this.
Best wishes
Ann
Thanks Ann
Sue, i hope you get on alright with this. My hickman line hurt on occasions due to the stitches holding it in stretching and moving, very uncomfortable. While waiting for it to be removed it also moved inside the breast and felt like a large hard lump. But of course this is not stinging.
Let us know how you get on.
Margaret
Thanks Margaret. Am waiting for chemo nurse to see it tomorrow - and of course, I was told a horror story about a small blood clot in a line…ARGH! It hurts dealing with it! I hope it’s not that. Told the nurse it hurt when I moved from side to side and leaned over and she said “stay still until tomorrow”!!! HAH!

Hi Sue
Your right to have it checked up.I had my first hickman line in May 19 but aftef 1month,i had an infection. Its best to go and have it checked up.its no bother really.Better to avoide being admitted to hospital for 1 week(end of June) then in the end,had the hickman line taken out(3july)…then needed to have a new replacement one 13July)done.So,far the replacement is behaving itself plus i am too paranoid not to wet it…im allergic to plaster adhesive so i had to chande daily the dressing…Good luck.

Ladies,
Update - I have no infection or anything like that. It seems to be adhesions, I am trying to make the line part of me! This explains why the pain is worst in the morning after I haven’t moved for 8 hours. And the pain seems to be the adhesions tearing (like a bee sting). You don’t want to hear the anglo saxon language when I get dressed in the morning! Only 2 more chemos to go (1 tomorrow) so I should need this thing for about another 4 weeks. And I’m not going to get 8 hours sleep for the next week thanks to the pain caused by tax - so it probably won’t be as bad for the next week or so and then there’s only another 3 weeks! Chemo nurse is going to talk to consultant, but the line works and if I can put up with this on top of everything else it would make life simpler.
Thanks for your interest and support

glad that the stinging is not due to infection. Adhesions can be nasty, hope they settle soon.
Good luck with the chemo tomorrow … I see you are currently amusing yourself emptying your email inbox into mine … all very funny, I’m fwding them on to all my pals
A girl’s gorra get some fun where she can! I couldn’t believe it when I opened my box and found all that stuff!
Glad that its not an infection Sue…nor a blood clot!!!
So am I - apparently it HURTS to clear a small blood clot - I didn’t listen TOO hard to the description coz I was crossing everything…but ouch! Glad it’s not an infection either. However, another 3 weeks of ango saxon language may cause divorce! Line worked fine for today’s chemo - which is the important thing - just waiting for the pain to hit in a few days though…joys.
