Problems with Picc line

Hi folks, wondering if you can give me some advice. My mum is going trhough chemo at the moment (FEC) and is very upset this evening as she is worried there is something wrong with her picc line. she had her first session of chemo this tuesday and has been coping really well (very queasy and tired, can’t taste anything but otherwise very mild side effects) up until this evening. She has been in a lot of discomfort with her picc line today but is has worsened this evening. It’s not swollen or red or leaking any funny coloured stuff, but the arm with the picc line in is very numb and is very painful, her chest also feels uncomfortable and she also has some pain in her neck.

Are these just normal side effects of the chemo or does it need checking out? We don’t have a number to ring as our out of hours number closed at 8pm and the macmillan line also closed at 8pm. We suspect ringing NHS direct will just get us general advice to take her to A&E.

Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks all

Hi, I had a picc line fitted for my chemo - FEC as well, and I would say what your mum is experiencing is not normal. I would contact NHS direct - I had to do this several times after I got my chemo as I was very sick and vomited constantly for about a week after each one, and they never asked me to travel but an on call doctor would come out. Better safe than sorry and hopefully others will come along and agree with this.
Take care

Hi there

I would reiterate the advice given to contact NHS direct too for further advice

Take care
