Ive so far escaped a diagnosis of ca, but Im the only female in my family who has. My nan, mum, sister, 2x Great Aunts, 1x Aunt & 2x cousins have all been diagnosed with either Breast or Ovarian.
My sister is 2 years post diagnosis (at 38)& had a lumpectomy, she is now having a mastectomy & reconstruction on the 4th Oct.
Im now 38 & Ive been through all the thoughts processes & have decided to have prophylactic mastectomy & reconstruction with implants. This surgery will take place some time soon, probably before 5th November.
I`d love some (hopefully) reassuring comments from anyone who has been through the same surgery.
I do feel like Im in control of whats happening & I keep reminding myself that this can happen because I DO still have all my choices available (having not had Ca....no tissue damage etc etc), but I keep having wobbles& its difficult for my wonderful brilliant husband to understand because he sees this as ano brainer`…
Just bumping this up for you. There are threads for September Mastectomy and October Mastectomy and probably others these will have some useful information in them. I am having Mx and immediate recon on 3rd October but I have breast cancer so can’t help from that aspect but you are very welcome to join threads.

hi Tinkerbell,
I had preventative double mx with recon 6 wks ago.I had muscle taken from my back plus expanders which havent been expanded yet due to swelling. The 1st couple of weeks were difficult, but 6 wks on the pain is minimal,i have regained most of the movement in my arms and although one boob is slightly misshapen(probably due to lumpectomy last year and radiotherapy)I am happy with results.I had both nipples removed too which will be reconstructed after everything has settled.I can honestly say that from the minute I came round from surgery my relief at being rid of my killer boobs was immense.I was given a choice that my mum and aunt never had and I feel like i have been given a second chance at a future.Good luck,
Di.
