Question for all Horse Riders

Hi All,

I had a grade 3 stage 1 breast tumour removed two years ago (wle followed by chemo & rads). I have now been diagnosed with the faulty BRCA1 gene and have opted to have a bilateral mastecomy with immediate TRAM flap reconstruction at the beginning of April. My question is to all horsey ladies…is there anyone out there who has had this surgery…will I be able to ride again (due to weakened abs?)…any comments would be helpful!!!

Susan

I too have had both breasts removed. The left on was done 4 weeks ago. However, my right one was in 2002. I was back riding a month after reconstructive surgery with my first one back in 02. Found it difficult to lift water buckets etc. Got on the horse okay but found dismounting difficult and had to do it cowboy style with leg over horses neck!!! But with the surgery this time I don’t seem to have any muscle weekness and could carry a 5k haynet with ease and no pulling at all. I do try to use the other arm more. I can’t comment on riding as my horse is only 2 so not yet rideable - obviously and I tend not to lead her out much as a) she is a nutter anyway and b)don’t want to risk half a ton of horse putting at my surgery but hopefully come summer when I am stronger and she is calmer I will go back to leading her etc. Both my reconstructions were from my back so cannot comment on the stomach ones sorry. Only just read that bit…
