Question for anyone on Capacetabine/Xeloda

Hi ladies

I am on my 2nd cycle of the tablets as on on TACT2 trial and would love to know if anyone else gets this horrible bloated feeling. By the end of the day I look preggers again ( thanks hubby)!! and its not due to lack of toilet trips. It feels really tight right at top of tummy ( under bra line area).

Its such an uncomfortable feeling…or this is down to my liver?? I will ask my trial nurse next week but just wondered if anyone else has experienced this feeling…!!!

Many Thanks

P xxx

I have just had my first round of Capecitabine [not part of the trial]. If all you have is bloating, be very thankful! I have peripheral neuropathy instead. My feet are agony to walk on, and my mouth is incredibly sore. It is almost impossible to eat. If they don’t improve by Monday, I think the next round will be delayed - which I really don’t want.

sorry to hear that Phoebe…good luck

Hi to P and P

I was on capecitabine for 2 yrs 2300 twice a day so I hope this helps.
E45 rubbed on feet every evening by hubby and I used on my hands baby soft hands and feet. Used Diflam mouth was 4 times a day so I didnt have any mouth ulcers but did feel sensitive.
I had really good shrinkage so I hope you both do as well. Onc can reduce dose as others on forum have had this done.

Hi paula,
I’m on this trial at the London Marsden.
My stomach is swollen too, in fact looks a bit like it did when I was taking all the steroids when on taxotere!

I am due to start cycle 4 tomorrow and have just had a CT to check my liver, results tomorrwo too!
They have given me something for the indigestion which I must admit has got rid of the uncomfortable feeling (just not the swelling).

Thanks Debs and Mabel

I will ask about this with my trial nurse. Mind you day 10 yestersday and I was sick 4 times even with anti-sickness but hard to tell if chemo or virus as whole body feels achy. Feel very weak today but must get my kidney beans of to school and nursery then I will rest again…

good luck all

Do you make sure that you’ve eaten something substantial before you take your chemo? It’s just a thought and might not be connected at all. I’ve been on it for 21 months so far and not had any of the problems you’ve described but, there again, we’re all different

Hi, I am on the tact2 trial so taking xeloda. I have just finished my second of four cycles. I did have nausea with it especially on the first cycle but now controlled well with cyclizine. Yes, i do get as bit bloated up especially if i have eaten fatty foods. Fatty stuff also gives me terrible heart burn. I always eat a mesl befor taking the tablets and that eliminates alot of side effects. My hands and feet are ok as normally gfreasy. Tips of my fingers are a bit tingly though. Poor you Phoebe with such bad side effects. I have been lucky so far with xeloda. It has been so much better than epi.

Hi Pinkdove

I do eat a meal before hand and do have a really good diet.ie. fruit veggies etc. I was sick yesterday morning well before my tablets and then 4 times afterwards, so at moment think I am battling a bug !!!

Hi Ladies

Am just about to embark on the TACT 2 trial. Don’t know what category I’ll be in till next week

Going for weight, height, bloods etc tomorrow - I am hoping that I will cope as well as you are - or not on some days as the case might be. I have read about the hand and feet syndrome Pheobe - it sounds like you have it bad - have they given you anything for it?

Any advice would be seriously appreciated.

Thanks all

Pammy

Hi Paula

Sorry to hear that it’s not the fact that you don’t eat before taking it! I just wonder sometimes whether it’s to do with each individual’s physiology when our bodies react so completely differently with some having hardly any symptoms and others seeming to have a lot.

Not yet. I am not sure that anything helps apart from pain killers and possibly prescription B6. Glutamate seems to be used a lot in the US for neuropathy. I may raise the possibility with my onc.

I’ve come to the conclusion that one is either neurologically or digestively affected by these drugs. On the whole I have very little trouble with nausea or diarrhoea, but neuropathy has increased on each new treatment. I am not sure how many have bad goes of both.

I feel that I’ve been extremely lucky on it and not had any side effects except from very minor ones with my feet (mainly dry and a bit flaky round the heels).

I’ve been on it constantly since September 2004 and have been told that it will continue until such time as it stops working or I get side effects.

Hi everyone,

I’ve had 3 cycles and have just had the 4th delayed due to side effects!
I’m a bit frustrated to be honest, managed 6 x Taxotere with few probs really but my fingers and toes are so sore on capcetibine. My prob is not with palms or soles of feet but the soft tissue surrounding my nails is infected and around my big toes in particular, infection which antibiotics haven’t touched!

I’m having a weeks break and going back to Marsden on Monday to see if any improvement. They may reduce the dose. I’m on the leap trail so having lapatinib with the cap, but we’re p[retty sure it’s the cap causing the infection.

Hi Jackie

Hope things start to improve for you. I get ‘threading’ of my skin round my cuticles and I tend to use Flexitol’s nail and cuticle cream for that and it seems to heal it really well.

Good luck!

Hello Pinkdove,

Thanks for the tip.

Hi everyone

Just wanted to drop a comment in to say - yes I am sooooo bloated. I get tummy ache & have to have a bottle on my stomach. Especially after my tea. Its seems that the bigger the meal the worse the tummy problems. I have been given a tab to help & it does a bit. Just glad that i am not alone with the tummy

My feet & hands have gotten dry but I just but cream on every night & hand cream everytime I wash my hands/wash up and thats helping

Take care

Hi Tips

Sorry you get it too but its so nice to know I am not alone. I can’t eat as much as I used to and don’t really have the urge appetite for food at present. I just feel generally rough and soooooooo tired, still it doesn’t help that I am on diclofenac and co-codomal for a fracture in my back plus running round after mad 20mnth old and 6yr old…how are other mums of youngsters coping???

Hi everyone

Paula and Tips, sorry to hear you’re suffering from being bloated. I feel for you both. It makes everything very uncomfortable when the digestive system isn’t working well. Paula, along with the other drugs you’re taking it must be really difficult - my heart goes out to you!

For my part, the Xeloda is giving me real problems at the moment with hand/foot syndrome. My hands are in danger of cracking up and I’m just about managing my feet. I’m creaming them with gusto - but it’s not enough. I’m on Cycle 2 and finish Monday evening - for my next cycle I shall be asking for some Vitamin B6. I know my hands and feet will not hold out til the end of this treatment.
