Breast Cancer Care

After my mastectomy in Dec , followed by Chemo, I am on dose 14 of Radiotherapy - 6 to go…I am sooooo sore, can anyone recommend anything other than Aqueous Cream or Aloe Vera Gel, for relief, as these seem to have little effect ?

Hi Ann

Have you asked at the hospital if there is anything they can give you for the soreness? I finished radiotherapy last week and my skin wasn’t too bad but a bit red and felt like I had prickly heat. The hospital gave me something called geliperm which is a transparent gel dressing that you can keep in the fridge. When you put it on the skin it gives temporary relief.

I was recommended to use a cool hairdryer to blow on the sore area for a few minutes several times a day. Also if you refrigerate Aloe Vera gel it works better. The longer you can expose breast to air the better.

Hello Lollie,
I asked the hospital for help last Thurs, the best they could offer was stronger pain killers ! So I’m now on a high dose co-codamol, not that it helps much. Thanks for the advice, I’ll make enquiries tomorrow.

Ann My skin after I finished rads was extremely sore and weeping. My oncologist prescribed Flamazine and within a week the skin was much less sore and healed.

I also had a nightmare with my skin and i was given intrasite gel by the hospital which worked wonders - might be worth asking. also they recommended not using any soap of any kind on that part of my skin - it did start to calm down. I
