Radio boost/Chicken Fillet

Afternoon all! I started radiotherpay just over three weeks ago, and had the first of four ‘boost’ sessions yesterday. The nurses put what can only be described as an enourmous ‘chicken fillet’ over my breast - you know the thing, we’d normally put them inside our bras. Anyway, the nurses called it a ‘gel’. What is it and what does it do? Or do I really not want to know…?

Hi. It’s called a bolus. Rather than reinvent the wheel, when you gon into the Forums, enter Bolus into the Search The Forums box & you’ll get approx. 120 hits of lots of lovely info & advice!

Good luck!

Thanks Haxted!

Hi Clare,A bolus is diferent from a boost.Be careful you don’t get confused.
A bolus is usually applied during all rads and its purpose is to increase the dose to the skin surface.
A boost or booster is usually given over about the last 5 rads and concentrates the rads on the tumour area

Thanks Dotchas. I ended up asking the Radio team and they adivsed that it was to create extra ‘skin and flesh’ between the radio beam and the tumour bed.
