Radiographer has worried me during mammogram

(So sorry I have re posted this here as not sure where it should go) Hi, I havent posted here before but have had 3 yearly routine mammograms and always had a letter saying all ok and I have never asked to see the full report. Past history was a giant juevenile fibroadenoma removed at 17 measuring 4". this left me no breast shape and 10 years later had an implant fitted to “even me up”.

during the mammogram on Thursday this week I happened to look at the radiographer who suddenly had a very surprised look on her face. following the mammogram as I was getting my top back on she said “They may call you back as a recall” and then hurriedly added “…but that doesnt mean anything would be wrong, if they did call you”.

I never had a radiographer comment about anything before and this has got me extremely worried that maybe she saw “something”. I thought they had to be completely neutral and not say anything. With Christmas this week, I could be waiting a while for any sort of letter.

Just very worried. Thank you so much for reading this. I feel a complete fraud having not actually been recalled.

Hi JoCT, can totally understand how worried you must be but if you do get a recall it will be really quick and something will be being done. When I had my routine mamogram in September I was happily chatting with the radiographer about the vanity of colouring your hair ( mines dyed blonde ) when she suddenly went very quiet and professional. I actually thought to myself blimey you’ve changed. When she said about the recall I was pretty confident one was coming my way and sure enough it did. The team who dealt with my recall were incredible and I was the only lady in the group I was with through that morning that sadly did have breast cancer so take heart that all the others had benign conditions. For me I had no lump that either I or they could feel but actually had multi focal invasive lobular and tubular cancer and they were really honest how serious having more than one lump is. I’ve now had a mastectomy and reconstruction and, because it was caught so early my initial histology shows I will not need radiotherapy or chemotherapy just tamoxifen. Without my mamogram picking it up so early it would have been a very different story so I will be forever indebted to the skills of that lady in a caravan in a leisure centre carpark who spotted an issue and started me on the road to resolving it. Whatever happens, if you get recalled or not you are in a system that totally looks out for you and will be supported throughout. Try hard not to worry, I’m a bit of a fatalist and think that worrying can’t change anything. Keep your chin firmly up and deal with the recall if it comes. Enjoy what’s left of Xmas and have a happy new year xx Melanie
