Radiotherapy Burns

Just wondering does everyone get burns or is it dependant on your skin etc?

Hi Fee

Totally depends on you and your skin. I didn’t have any problems at all. I applied e45 cream every day. My nipple area did get sore towards the end and was given some honey based cream by the radiotherapy nurses which was brilliant.

Some ladies do have problems though, so just see how you go xx

Hi Sue, thank you I only asked because I see so many people posting about creams and how they used the prior to treatment etc but I was advised not to so was unsure why. I was asked if I normally used moisturisers etc but I don’t so they said well it’s best not to start then. If I need cream they said they would give me it. Thank you x

I was the same as Sue, didnt really have too many problems with burns, other than the breast was a lot darker than the other by the time I finished, I moisturised 2/3 times a day.  My nipple area was a bit swollen and sore towards the end of the treatment, but it recovered quite quickly afterwards and is now back to normal.

Hi Ive just finished my 15fractions and a slight brown tinge across my breast. I diligently moisturised and used the steriod creame on once a day as directed. The people that looked after me were first class. They explained everything to me. Im glad all is behind me now to get on with my life. Ive had no side effects only a little tired from time to time. But ive a strict routine and that helps me. Drinling copious amounts of water as well as I got a tad dehydrated but its good to get into the habit of drinking it. Good luck keep tapped in here as so much valuable info and help ?xxxx

Thank you Bea xx I’ve only had 3 so far but was advised not to use creams unless I need them so I’ll try and follow advice as I get it, they do say burns etc start about day 7 and onwards x

Hi, Yesterday I started to get really scared and have come back to this thread for some comfort. I know everyone is different but I am hanging on to hope that this thread remains true for me too. I drove myself half mad last night because of something I read but trying to get my feet back on the ground right now!!! Obviously that would go better if I got out of bed Te he xxx

Morning Zoe xxx hope your ok xxx I had a day like that yesterday too :frowning: Wish I could say I felt better today but I don’t … spent most of yesterday in bed and I’m still in it. I need to get up and make an effort but after seeing gp I’m worried sick … this bone scan won’t be done quick enough now. I hope you have a better day today, have you got any plans for the weekend? Xx

Hi, no I am fine thank you Helena. This thread settled me completely. I needed to hear that all will be fine!! I felt tired that was all and something I read unsettled me. Back in super duper positive land again today. I think you champions do a great job, thank you xxx

Few hope you feel more sparky soon!

Hi, i am one of the few unlucky ones. I had 4 boost and 15 full breast BUT after the 4 boost my rads oncologist called me and explained because i was big busted, the team didn’t think 15 was enough for the entire breast so they wanted to increase by another 10. Long story short, i was able to keep the 15 but the dose of rads was increased. By the last treatment i had developed a blister and within the next week i had7 in total under my breast and my nipple. Surprisingly my breast healed reasonably quickly. The cancer unit supplied me with plenty of burn lotion and dressings and i was able to go there any time and have them check my breast and to restock with dressings and cream. I’m now 6 weeks post rads and breast is beautiful! nipple is still dry but moisturiser helps, over the past week my under arm has darkened and looks very tanned but no blisters.

SOrry, i don’t wish to distress anyone by my story. I thinkk the better your skin is before rads, the less reaction you have. I’ve always had alot of blemishes and pimples on my breasts - tiny little ones. Maybe if i had have moisturized more often i would have had less reaction, who knows
