Radiotherapy for small breast cancer

yes I had a mastectomy in 2022 with an immediate reconstruction (diep flap). that’s cos you can’t have radiotherapy twice on the same breast. Mine was a new primary with an intramammary node which had metastatic cancer in it, making it seem like another tumour next to the breast cancer tumour.

I was at Barts for first surgery and radio in 2003-2004 and Guy’s for mastectomy and recon. When I had radiotherapy I burned very badly so I don’t want to have it again. So far so good.

Hi, am interested in why you refused hormone treatment? Do you mind me asking.
My case is very similar to yours & I am due to have my follow up appointmentcwith the consultant on thursday four weeks post surgery. He had previously mentioned about hormone therapy as my cancer was feeding from the estrogen I held so it needs to be supressed going forward. I am also expecting a discussion around radiotherapy.
I am 58 years old. Its a minefield with all the information your given.
Take care :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi thanks for responding  I’m really struggling coming off HRT so am currently taking a view not to take endocrine therapy although it is recommended- I have radiotherapy in a few weeks so will speak with oncologist again xx best wishes to you - hope all goes well xx :star_struck:

This is the same as happened to me. I had WLE and SNB and 4 weeks later 5 days of radiotherapy and now have to take anastrozole every day for the next 5 years. I too have been very lucky compared to some of people I have met on my cancer journey. I am using what happened to me to raise awareness about breast cancer

My first cancer was grade 1 I was 48 and I didn’t want to miss any work I also had no lymph node involvement. I had originally been diagnosed as having a benign lump so waited 6 months for surgery then got told I would need another op as the margins weren’t clear followed by radiotherapy. That was in Dec 2003. I hada wound infection after so radiotherapy was delayed to April 2004.

The most recent cancer I have is grade 2 with a metastatic lymph node next to it so hence mastectomy and reconstruction this time. Plus I am much older. 67 this time

I opted out of radiology out on a small cancer ( excised by lumpectomy) in right breast some 16 years ago and no further trouble with with right breast . I was similar age to you and I looked at the data and decided it was right for me not to have it .

However 3 years ago I had a small cancer in left breast treated with a lumpectomy and no further treatment . I was offered letrozole but the risk of osteoporosis was an issue as there is a strong family history of osteoporosis in both my parents and sibling.
Unfortunately the cancer came back in left breast and I had a mastectomy yesterday.

Would I still make the same decisions , I say yes as they were right for me, I spoke to the oncologist who told me the risks and advantages of not having the hormones control and I weighted them up.
What ever you decide, I hope it works out well for you.

Yes . I have had breast cancer three times, 16 years ago right breast and no further issues. Three years left breast and now this year, so between a clear mammogram in November 2023 to the symptom of intense pain for only 48 hours in July in 2024 the left breast developed a stage 3 cancer.
I was lucky because although the clinic registrar cleared me on examination and said there was no palpable bumps but as an abundance of caution I was sent for an ultrasound.
I knew there was something wrong when the ultrasound radiologist started measuring something and did a biopsy.
I was lucky because I because the pain which I nearly ignored made me get an early appointment… (I missed out the GP ) and the registrar said that although he was sure there was nothing, ordered the ultrasound to reassure me. If I had waited to the next surveillance mammogram things would have been worse.
