Radiotherapy on newly healed wound

Hello

I have had 4 sessions of radiotherapy on a lumpectomy wound which was still oozing slightly, 11 more to go. I was given Cetrabens as a moisturiser. I am worried about the wound, have you any suggestions as to what I should put on it and should I cover it after each daily treatment. The nurse suggested vaseline today but I don’t think she was very sure. Also how should I clean it and what with. I had a bath this morning and it was weeping a bit after that. So many different suggestions online. Please help I am so scared of it opening again.

Hi im not sure what you would put on an open wound but can you speak to a specialist radiotherapy nurse? I know there are special dressings for skin breaking down due to radiotherapy so maybe something like that might be possible. My radiotherapy department gave me the number for the specialist nurses at the beginning of treatment in the information booklet. Hope you can get some help with it. Xx

Dear lolo66,

Well done for getting this far with your treatment, my husband has some issues with skin cancer and was told to use Vaseline as it’s very safe, this has worked wonders for him. I think this would be safe for you to use. However keep your eye on it…if it’s weeping as you don’t want it to get infected.

Was wondering if you could call your breast cancer nurse this morning, or the nurses on this site who are extremely helpful on 0808 800 6000 for reassurance.

Thanks for your post. It sounds as if this is a difficult time with the side effects of radiotherapy.

It’s important that you ask the radiotherapy radiographer or nurse as @susynight says about what you should put on the wound, as they are best placed to advise you. They will need to assess the area affected and can suggest how to best manage it. Putting cetraben or Vaseline on a wound that is oozing will increase your risk of developing an infection. Washing the area with warm, mild soap and rinsing well with water will usually keep the area clean and gently pat with a clean towel to dry.

Your radiotherapy radiographer, GP, practice nurse or local pharmacist may be able to advise on dressings to cover the wound whilst it’s healing.
