Radiotherapy Side Effects

Afternoon all, I am hoping someone will be able to help me. I finished radiotherapy last Friday and was quite pleased that I didn’t seem to be too badly affected but the past few days have changed that. I was told that my skin would get worse before it got better. It has now started to blister on my chest, I cannot wear a bra as it is so uncomfortable and I have extreme pain in my armpit (where is is practically black) the pain is there whether I move my arm on not.

What can I do - should I just grin and bear it until it all settles down and accept it as part of the treatment, contact the rads dept at the hospital or see my GP?

Has anyone else had any of these side effects. I feel as though I have suffered every bad side effect from every treatment I have received from infection after surgery to damaged heart due to herceptin.

Sorry for the moan but getting really fed up with it all now.

Thanks

Jean

Hi Jean

I am sure your fellow users will be along soon, in the meantime it would be wise to call your breast care nurse or the radiotherapy unit for specific advice on your symptoms.

Take care
Lucy

Hi Jean,

You poor thing! Definitely contact the rads department and describe what has happened. They will tell you what you need and then you can get your GP to prescribe it.

Rest assured, it will get better and fairly soon if you get the right dressings and medication for it. I had open weeping burns on my nipple a few days after the end of rads and they told me to get intrasite gel which cleared it up in 3 or 4 days. Don’t worry about the bra - just wear loose soft T shirts that can keep a dressing in place but not irritate your armpit.

Hope you feel better soon - sending you a cyber hug which is much better than a real one right now!

Horrible for you.
I agree - phone RADs, no reason you should grin and bear it-I’m sure they will be able to offer some advice and suggest the right thing to ask for from the GP.

Hope soon feelong better, take care

Hi all, thanks for your advice and comments. went to see GP and District Nurse on Thursday on the advice from my BCN and will have to attend my local health clinic 3 times a week to clean and dress my ‘burns’ really sore in the armpit now skin completely black and now starting to peel, leaving vivid pink skin underneath. Extremely painfull and a wee bit smelly. Feel as though I take 3 steps forward and 2 back.

Anyway, hope everyone had a good weekend, cyber hugs to all

Hi Jean

I had blisters that bled and sore skin. My BCN gave me Manuka honey dressings that were brilliant - smelt but nice not nasty!

Fingers crossed it heels soon.
