Rads?

Why do some ladies not have rads Hope one of the ‘experts’ on this site will explain thanks Eileen

Hi Eileen,

I’m not an expert and have learnt loads from this site. I am having rads because I had high grade DCIS, had removal of DCIS, reconstruction and reduction of the other breast and was under 40 when diagnosed. According to a risk scale that the doctors use, I am at high risk of having BC again. However, if I had a mastectomy, I would not have required radiotherapy.

I hope this helps but I am sure that there must be other reasons why some do and some don’t.

I was given rads because the cancer was found close to my ribcage, also the margin was 1mm and not as much as my surgeon would have liked so he had to cut the tissue back as far as my chest wall.

I was in hospital with a lady who was having a mastectomy, clearance and reconstruction at the same time. The reason she was offered a reconstruction was because she wasn’t having rads, it wasn’t felt necessary in her case. She was under thae same surgeon and if she had been having rads she would have had to wait for the reconstruction. Apparently rads can break down the implant from what I have read.
