recon recovery

Hi all
I had a LD flap recon 3 weeks ago and have been home for 2 weeks now and 2 weeks since drain came out.
I am wondering if its normal at this stage to have a brusing feeling where the drain was in my side. I can lie on that side but its still uncomfortable. My back is still very tender and I still need a pillow behind me.
Im back driving now as well but chaniging gear isnt as easy as I expected.
When I bend over I still feel tight across my Recon side.
I can do most things around house except reaching up to peg washing. and I still cant put any weight on recon side but i can hoover and clean etc

Is all this pretty normal for this stage of recovery.Or am I expecting too much of myself…I am still resting quiet a bit too.

Cheers Sally xx

Hi,
don’t panic all sounds normal, it does take time I am now 9 months out.
I was very tender were drains were for a long time,I was advised not to lift arm above shoulder height for 3 months and not to push my self off chair on the recon side for that time as well, also not to pull things like car doors shut with my arm on recon side for at least 2 months to allow every thing to settle.
Don’t push yourself.
rest and relax, let some one else do the hoovering, you have had major surgery it takes time to heal.

xx

Hi Sally

Sounds like you’re doing brilliantly. it is a big op and it does take time.

It may be 3 - 6 months before you are back to all your normal activities (depending on how sporty you are)

There are a few threads near the top of this bit that cover LD flap recovery.

If you can’t find them, pm me and I’ll do some cut and paste for you - I had mx + LD flap/implant recon Jan this year.

Good luck

Diane

Hi Sally
You are doing really well. I had LD flap reconstruction with my mastectomy in November and although I recovered very well I certainly wasn’t driving in 3 weeks!
Bending over was uncomfortable for a while and the drain sites ( I had 2) were bruised for a while and uncomfortable to lie on but strangely I was always more comfy on my mx side, but I think most of the uncomfortable feeling in my side comes from the port under my skin… really looking forward to getting rid of that little b***er! My back probably gave me more pain than anywhere else although I have no scar on my back.
Regarding lifting my arm above my shoulder… I was encouraged to do that asap and could do this while still in hospital, my mobility has been great… I have been very good about doing the exercises. I do find that the area under my arm get uncomfortable and stiff when I am tired or when I am exerting myself.
Always interested to know… does anyone else who had LD recon feel sensation in their back when they prod their new boob?!
QRT x

Thanks all

I feel alot better now knowing that I’m doing ok regarding my recovery.I always feel rather silly asking the BCN silly questions but on here I know that no-one will think that as I’m sure we all have them from time to time (or maybe I’m wrong and I am silly…LOL)

QRT…I have a funny sensation too but its when my back is touched in a certian place I get the fluttery feeling in mynew boob…and its quiet pleasant too…lol…

Hope you all have a lovely day
Sally xx
