Reconstruction help?

I had mastectomy with immediate implant reconstruction and nipple sparing surgery to my right side in June 2024 and a reduction to the left side. The nipple became necrotic and was removed on the right a month later and subsequently i had a problem with healing and infections for 6 months amd through the start of my chemo. The implant had to be removed in Dec 2024 and I was taken flat as I was scared of sepsis. My treatment has now ended and I wanted to know if anyone has experience of reconstruction at 61 years that isnt an implant (I think my body didnt accept it). I had initially want to stay flat but I am having doubts as I dont like my body image the way it is. Any shared experiences would be gratefully received :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi gemmaxralph

Thank you for your post.

It sounds like you’ve been through a lot over recent months following your breast surgery and it’s understandable you want to look at different options for breast reconstruction to help you decide what might be right for you.

It’s important to discuss with your breast treatment team which types of reconstruction they would be able to offer you and timelines for surgery to support your decision.

You may find the breast cancer reconstruction charities Keeping Abreast and Restore helpful.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.

Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen, talk things through and signpost you to additional support and information if necessary.
