Recovery after laproscopic oophorectomy

Hi everyone
Not sure if I am getting the spellings right, but what is the recovery like following a laproscopic oophorectomy (ovaries removed)?
I am due to have this done next week, whether or not my ovarian cyst has gone, as I am hormone + BC and fed up with zoladex and general mucking around of gynaecological scans/bleeding etc that I have been having recently.
I am just wondering how long it generally takes people to recover - ie back to normal and to work (mostly desk job) and driving? Also are the SE’s likely to be any different to being on Zoladex?
many thanks!

Hi Justy

I stayed in one night after having this and went home the following lunchtime. The scars were tiny (I also had ovarian cysts and had to sign for a more major procedure if keyhole couldn’t be done, but luckily it was!) I dosed up with the painkillers given and no pain broke through! I had booked 2 weeks off work, but could have gone back sooner, if anything I felt a fraud as I was OK and doing housework and stuff I’d told myself I wasn’t going to do for a while.
If I got up quickly etc, I noticed a drawing pain for a couple of days, possibly because I was carrying on as normal. The stitches were dissolvable so no removal, which was an added bonus.

I suffered badly on the zoladex with hot flushes and poor sleep. After the op I was expecting surgically enduced menopausal symptoms. I had a couple of minor flushes, but these soon calmed down. One strange thing I did experience, that I think was exclusive to me, was a week later I had a very weepy day, when I kept getting all emotional over silly things (a bit like after giving birth) - must have been a hormone imbalance. But again I got over that!

Good Luck, hope all goes well, if you have any questions, feel free to PM me,

Take care Nicky x

I had this day surgery at 10am and was home by 3.30pm. Went to school parents eve that night too! Driving in about 3 days. Simple op, side effects same as zoladex/tamox, few flushes. Good luck

I was told it was a walk in the park and I would recover within a week with one night in hospital. It turned out to be a trek up a mountain and it took me a month to be back to normal. But now all is forgotten and I am fine
All the best to you and look after yourself

Hello Justy
Had a laporoscopic oophorectomy nearly 2 weeks ago now. Afternoon op meant I had to stay overnight.
Pain was very manageable, just paracetamol, which I ditched after 3 days.
If I had worked, I could have gone back this week (so about 10 days post surgery), but it depends what you do. Drove after one week.
For me it was a quick and easy experience. Hot flushes have intensified somewhat, but not as bad compared to when I first experienced them during chemo. I never experienced Zoladex, so can’t comment.
Hope this helps, Nikki xx

Hi everyone
Thanks so much for your comments, it helps to hear that on the whole it has been a fairly easy op to recover from.
I am not sure what to think at the moment, as apparently my large ovarian cyst has disappeared again. So I think that means that, in theory, I wouldn’t have to have my ovaries out still. But as I am facing years of zoladex, and I also don’t like the thought of cysts potentially appearing with no way of know what’s going on, I think I would feel ‘safer’ without them anyway. Not to mention that with ER+ BC I obviously AM safer without them!!
So thanks again for your support everyone
Justy xx
