Regular "Web Chats" With Guest Speakers!

Hi Ladies,
I posted on another thread about how wouldnt it be great if we could have “live web chats” every few mths where BCC could invite,Guest Speakers people like Health Professional/Drs/Recearchers/Politicians ect(Andrew Lansley) would be great , so we could all put our questions to them and get some accurate cancer info, and at the same time get our questions answered/challenge about treatment funding issues? I know breastcancer.org does regular “web chat” sessions on their website with different Expert Guest Speakers and it realy is helpfull and very informative.
I think this is something that BCC would quite like to do too in the future,so i was thinking it would be great for BCC to get everyones feedback about whether or not they would like to see something like this on the froums?

Thanks Ladies

I think it’s a great idea. Hope you can get it going.

Hi everyone

Just wanted to repeat what I said on cornishgirl’s other thread (and thanks cornishgirl for starting this thread so others can join in with their thoughts). This kind of thing is something we want to do but it might not be something we can do immediately.

However, it’s really interesting to hear whether it’s something you’d be interested in, and also what sort of topics/speakers you’d most like to see in this format.

So do leave your thoughts here and we’ll see what we can do.

Thanks
Leah

The thing about the chatroom is, as it’s only once a week I keep forgetting about it so by the time I’ve remembered, it’s all over!

If you DO manage to get web chats up and running, I’m not sure what questions I’d want to ask, it depends on who the speaker is. And would you possibly run into trouble with a guest speaker giving different advice to a person’s own onc? It does seem that the standard treatments offered differ greatly depending on where in the country you are treated.

Hi ChoccieMuffin,
I think what is being suggested is not so much advise but getting a clearer picture/understanding of whats going on in cancer world, for me i would like to be able to participate in a “Ask-the-Expert Online Conferences” like the facility some other breastcancer websites already have.

breastcancer.org for instance has a “Professional Advisory Board” who provide advice and guidance making sense of the complex medical information about breast cancer so women can make the best decisions for their lives,Many of their PAB members participate in their Ask-the-Expert Online Conferences" ie M.D./Scientists,Leading Professors of oncloogy, and so on ,so are able to answer questions on important topics about breast cancer.
ie Research, drugs in the pipeline,Q&As,Biology and causes of cancer,Endogenous Hormones and Breast Cancer,Cancer and Nutrition,Triple Neg Breast cancer, ect ect the list is endless.

CRUK recently published on their science update blog that CRUK and Wikipedia will soon be teaming up to provide us with reliable “accurate cancer information”, and i think its great that CRUK wants to expand their involvement into other online areas.

“CRUK says
“Finding reliable cancer information amongst the online morass is extremely important.”
“But as the internet evolves – especially the so-called ‘social web’ – we need to work out where we can be of most benefit. Should our involvement in the online world begin and end with our own website? Should we also spend time engaging with other online communities? And how much relative effort should we spend on these different tasks?””

scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2011/04/06/wikipedia-and-the-changing-world-of-online-cancer-information/

So for me i think CRUK and other Cancer organisations have come to realise that with so much "contradictory and sometimes dubious " cancer information available especialy online, that its vital that trustworthy and reliable up to date infromation is available to cancer pateints especialy on “Social Networking” sites .

I think it would be a great oppertunity to be able to put our questions to those that work closely in the field of cancer and also to be able to invite Guest Speakers ie Politions to question/challenge about treatment funding issues so we can campagin more effectively? and focus more on all those important issues.

Id like to see more of an " Online Conferences" type of thing so “everyone” can have the oppertunity to take part (if they want to) rather than a “Web Chat room” as such where as you say topics like this could be missed, but i dont think it needs to be weekly , but regular every “few mths” or so ,so that people can keep up to date on current findings, help and information.

I think it would be great, but i understand not everyone may feel the same.

Thanks for raising some very valid questions.

Hi Ladies,
Just Bumping up to see if anyone else would be interested in something like this, and also if anyone has any ideas on who “YOU” would like to invite as “Guest Speakers”?.

For research purposes
I would realy like to invite people like Sarah Chilcott Burns who is working on the Breakthrough Generations Study,or Prof Alan Ashworth (proberly bit ambitious) but who is the Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, London ,(Professor Alan Ashworth is a world leader in the field of breast cancer research.)
Also people like Professor Tim Key who is one of the leading UK researchers on the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer (EPIC), the largest study of diet and health.
I would also like to invite Professor Herbie Newell, about his vision of the future for cancer treatment.Professor Herbie Newell has over 30 years’ experience of developing cancer drugs.

And the many, many more different health professionals with all their different expertise who play key roles in all areas of cancer not just research!

For Political issues such as treatment funding ,Post code Lottery issues,Benefits and financial support for cancer patients,ESA/DLA and all the complications that go with that, it would have to be be Andrew Langsley,David Cameron,or Nick Clegg!
I would also like to invite representatives from CRUK to give talks and advise with Q&As and of course also talks with our lovely Nurses here and the Clinical team at BCC.

These are just a few of my ideas and i know its a tall order, but wouldnt it be great!

Any more ideas/suggestions?

Hi, I would like some information on Lipofilling for those that have had WLE. There is a debate at the moment on health issues for this procedure and as it is becoming more popular,it would be good to have some clear information on it. I noticed that NICE are publishing findings in July on this subject.

Happy Easter hols.

Hi Fit girl there is a thread about fat transfer and lipofilling. Sorry useless at doing links. J xx
