Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone knew how to request a specific surgeon in the NHS? I have had one outpatient appointment with one who didn’t feel great and I was in and out very quickly but maybe that’s par for the course. A Dr friend has mentioned two surgeons in the hospital who he thinks are very good but I am not sure how to switch. Any ideas gratefully
received.
A very warm welcome to the forum. So sorry to read that your not feel too confident with your consultant,
I feel maybe a chat with your Breast Cancer nurse be completely honest with her, how you’re feeling don’t worry that you may be offending somebody this is a very important time for you and things must be right. If you feel that you may be more comfortable seeing a different consultant please let her know she will be able to arrange this for you.
Anxiety takes a big toll on us, may I suggest you have a notepad asking lots of questions.
Wishing you well going forward, please come back and let us know how your getting along,
I’m sorry to hear you’re going through uncertainty regarding your surgeon. Please know that our nurses are hear to talk things through anytime, here on the forum on the Ask our Nurses your questions or over the phone 0808 800 6000.
I was referred to a breast surgeon by the GP and she was perfectly fine but had started new in the hospital and in fact new to the country and none of the nurses in the oncology had heard of her and I was not so confident so asked my Gp for a change as it is important to have confidence in your surgeon and you should not feel guilty about it .
Hi there. Sorry you are feeling anxious about your surgeon. My experience is that most of the warm kindly Support and information comes from the BCNs and the surgeons are not massively into empathy. I would be looking at the one who operates best, like an oncoplastic surgeon with loads of experience even if they are gruff and to the point. You will only see them a couple of times after all. Mine has changed three times since diagnosis in 2020 and I have a lovely kindly lady now but the previous two were excellent even if they were blunt and dismissive.
Thanks so much for reply. I am speaking with her today and I am thinking that it’s OK to change surgeons if I am not feeling it so thanks for the support x
