Sam Taylor-Wood and diet
Sam Taylor-Wood and diet I’ve just read a very interesting article in the Times Body and Soul about this artist who has had two ‘bouts’ of cancer, colon and then breast. She’s 39 and now pregnant. She radically overhauled her diet after her mastectomy and went down the ‘Plant route’ of no dairy.
Am I alone in finding it hard not to feel a) worried b) guilty that by eating ‘normally’ I might not be doing my utmost to fend off the disease? When I was first diagnosed a year ago I did read Plant and it terrified me. I did give up dairy for a while and lost lots of weight at least! But gradually I resumed old habits. Do we really have to see a bowl of cheese as carcinogenic? I realise that while the disease is still a mystery- and incurable- there’s more scope for odd ideas. Books about diets for arthritis and ms would seem to indicate this but it’s so hard not to feel scared by an apparent ‘link’.
What do people think? Glad for Sam though. She looks great and has certainly been through enough!

FIRMLY NOT GUILTY Everyone needs to watch what they eat, but within reasonable limits.
I enjoy vegetables, and fish, all sorts of healthy food, but also like to eat things which some people dont think would be a good idea, cake, chocolate - need I go on!
If I took on a new eating regime it would be another wagon to fall off of, I like being naughty sometimes!

Hello Kitty I believe in the old saying, everything in moderation.
I’ve never smoked, don’t drink a lot but what goods it done me.
There’s no proof but I think stress causes a lot of problems, I was under quite a lot both times I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Don’t feel guilty about what you eat, life’s too short.

once more… I have posted on this subject in the past, but it’s probably worth commenting on again.
The dairy debate rages on and on in these forums and if you have a look through previous posts you’ll find many different opinions.
It is my understanding that Dr Plant advocates a diet consisting of no more than 15% dairy. So that’s not quite the same as cutting out all dairy completely.
She herself had orthodox treatment alongside overhauling her diet (I know this because she was treated by my Oncologist, who incicdentally does not believe there to be any link between dairy products and BC).
There are also many other factors in the lifestyles of Japanese and Chinese women which make it quite difficult to attribute their low incidence of BC simply to a reduced dairy intake.
To 5StarShiny Steph…
Thanks for replying to my anxious post! Notice you live in Fareham? I grew up there in Mill Road off Redlands Lane and my uncle still lives there so I’m often back. I don’t know if we’re a similar age? ( I’m 46) The town is certainly VERY different from the one we moved to in 1967! How historical I am!!
Best wishes
