scar redness during chemo

Hi Ladies,

Apologies for bursting straight in, but I was a bit lost trying to find info on the website.

My mum was diagnosed at the beginning of the year, and has just had her second dose of chemo following a mastectomy. She’s been doing so well throughout everything, and has not been feeling too bad throughout her treatment. But she has a question.
Since her 2nd dose of chemo her mastectomy scar has become a bit red. It doesn’t hurt, so she’s not overly concerned. She did phone her chemo nurse, who told her to ring her other nurse(i’m not too sure who’s who!), who’s told her to go to her GP!!??
All she want’s to know is “Is it normal for the scarring to go a bit red?” Obviously she will make a trip to the GP next week, but wanted me just to quickly see if I can find out.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Hi Clare,
I had my chemo before my op so can’t offer any advice on that sorry but I am sure others will be able to.
Does chemo nurse mean for your mum to speak to her breast cancer nurse ,she should have one.
Her breast care nurse could look at it and give the right advice.

Sorry can’t be of more help, but hope your mum is well and coping.

Hi CLaire,
The Scars on my Masectomy are pretty fiery red at the moment - I’m on my 3rd Chemo session - and are showing no signs of fading. It doesn’t hurt any more than it did before the Chemo, but it is pretty red!! As long as it’s doesn’t hurt I’m OK with it - but it does also look like it has pulled apart a little bit - the scars looks a little wider on both boobs than before I started the Chemo, so maybe it is just another side effect that fades afterwards…

Thanks for your replies,

It was her breast care nurse who told her to go to the GP I think?! Well, it’s not causing her any problems, that’s the main thing…she’s just not sure if it’s right. I’m sure she’ll book a GP app. on Monday anyways!X

I had a recon after my mastectomy and started chemo 6 weeks later. My recon always swells, feels tight and the scar is redder for about a week after. I did tell the onc about it but she said as long as it isn’t inflamed or infected it shoud be okay but to keep an eye on it. It does get back to normal after about a week. i am on the TACT 2 trials and am on the 4th epi at the minute. It is always best to get a proffesional opinoin though as not everyone is the same.
