second masectomy

hello, I have just joined this forum i did tyy another but my computing skill are nil and i couldn’d access it so hopfully this one i can work. I need advice i had a mastectomy 5 years ago next month. dcis however after op 2 tumours were found so instead of just a wee bit of rad therapy i had the works 6 mthes chemo every 3 weeks rad therapy herceptin every 3 weeks for a year and now on to my last year of arimidex. I asked surgon last week if he would remove the remaining healthy breast he was brill yes he would but my choice to make. as th mammagram or ultrasound didn’t pick up either tumour having a yearly one does not reassure me.I have just been offered a mri if that would reassure me, but i think if i have this one off now it will save my lympnodes others all removed when had mastectomy, now have lympodema and cellulius. Have just turned 60 and dont want recontruction. anyone had heathy one off . sorry this is so long

Hi mollie60 and welcome to the forum but this is not the right section for your question. If you look on the left hand side of this page you will see a list of categories where I am sure you will get answers. Alternatively a moderator may well see this and transfer you. Good Luck.

Dear molly10,

I noticed this post and have moved it to the “Undergoing treatment- surgery” section of the forum. As Olivia mentioned, more people will see it here and I am sure you will soon get some replies and support from other forum members.

You can also phone our Helpline to talk things over. The number is 0808 800 6000. The are open on weekdays from 9.00am-5.00pm and on Saturdays from 9.00am -2.00pm.

Take care

Very best wishes

Hi Molly,
I didn’t have my 2nd breast off 7 years ago and now regret it. Read my profile. This may be the encouragement that you need to go ahead.
All the best with what ever you decide

Hi
Bumping this up because l also would be interested in other ladies views on this subject.
Are there any ladies further down the line who have considered having their other breast removed?

Hi sandra i’ve already spoken to Molly via pm but will just also let you know my experience… I had a second mastectomy last sept and found it to be much easier than the first… they didn’t have to remove any lymph nodes and I had full movement back in my arm as soon as they removed the drains… (i’ve got lymphodema in the other arm and really didn’t want to risk getting it on the other side…) In my case my “good” breast had started to show some signs of change in the May - nipple suddenly went inverted which was one of the symptoms on the side I had breast cancer so even though a scan at the time showed no sign of cancer my surgeon and bcn were fully behind me in my decision to have the second op… (i do also come from a family with a really bad history for breast cancer)

Thank You Theresa,
Hadn’t really given it much though before Molly asked the question, but l thought it was a good question, and one l will be asking my surgeon or bcn the next time l see them, not ready to go down that route yet, as l wont have finished treatment until November, but something to think about.
Good to have your thoughts
