Secondary cancer travel insurance to go west- help?!

Hi all,

Can anyone suggest an insurance company that will insure for travel to the Caribbean?? Have secondary bone mets and so far Insure Pink, MIA and Bromley have all failed to offer any quotes to insure me. Or come up with £2k to get 2 weeks cover!!!

Are we barred from travelling west just because of secondary cancer??!

Advice please very welcome.

Hi, there are quite a few threads about getting travel insurance and recommendations about which ones are worth trying. Have a little trawl.

I’ve never been able to get insurance for BC with secondaries so have spent the last five years merrily travelling the world including US, Maldives etc without BC cover, just normal cover for luggage, delays and medical cover for normal things. I’ve been lucky…

Enjoy your holiday!

Tina

Hi Starryskies
It may depend on how long since you finished invasive treatment? My OH and I went to Jamaica earlier this year and had to pay about £200 for a week which I thought was reasonable. However I am 3 and a half years post secondary dx and my mets are stable. I used Insure Pink so it’s interesting to see that they won’t insure you. Have a look on the secondaries part of the forum, there’s a very long thread about travel insurance with some other companies listed. You may need to search a bit but I think it’s in the financial part - if there is one! Hope you do get some reasonable insurance but the Caribbean is linked in with USA which means insurance is very high.
Good Luck

Thanks Tina and Nicky!

Read all the threads and finally got cover through Insurewith.com - including cancellation which I’ve never managed to get before - but hope I don’t need it as desperate for some sunshine. £57 for 2 weeks in Cyprus and £233 for 2 weeks in St Lucia so not too expensive.

Don’t think I could travel without insurance - blame my sensible mother!!

Regards.

Hope you get away soon, I think we’re all desperate for a bit of sun after this so-called summer!
I always pay for additional travel insurance for further afield holidays but stick to my EHIC card for the medical side when I visit my daughter in France. This would cover anything to do with my mets and I’d never travel if I felt unwell anyway. Luckily we have an annual travel policy that comes with our bank account that covers every other medical possibility as well as all the other travel inconveniences. Anywhere that would require an expensive trip home or medical treatment I’m as sensible as your mother!

Hi, I have bone and liver mets and I’ve just come back from the Maldives. After weeks of searching for an insurance company I called Just Insurance which is a broker and they managed to get me with Good to Go but it was very expensive, but I wouldn’t dare travel without it. The tel number is 0844 477 0607, they were fabulous. And you might be able to get a grant from Macmillan - ask your Breast Care Nurse about this. Good Luck!!

Started looking for insurance in May when I thought I was well enough and had been given clearance to travel by my onc. Unfortunately, this does not mean much with companies and so far I have been refused by every company but one… I have liver mets but it is stable and every CT shows it is reducing but apparently this is not enough. I was quoted £220 to go to Zante for a week and £750 to go to Canada for 16 days. Both the plane tickets were cheaper than this! I have finally decided to go to Greece with normal insurance and an ehic card but will pay for the Canadian trip with the help of my sister … as I often point out to the poor people on the phone … it feels like a punishment on top of a punishment!!! There has to be a better way… we are all trying to be positive about our condition but after 6-7 enquiries and lots of questions and rejections, I often feel very depressed and wonder about how all those people with inspirational stories of trips to Machu Pichu managed it… unless of course they mortgaged their houses…

I always use insurancewith.com now as they seem the most reasonable around (I have primary BC)and they seem to know what they are talking about. I’m glad they came through for you too Starryskies, the prices you’ve paid seem ok. I have resigned myself to always paying more for my travel insurance now!

Have a lovely time.
