I have just been diagnosed with bc and my dr has recommended a sentinel node biopsy. Has anyone had this procedure?

I too had a sentinal node byopsy at the same time as a wide local excision to remove the cancer. They sent it straight to pathology while i was still under and it came back positive so thay too the lot out from under my arm. The results came back and had cancer in 3 out of the 14 removed. Had they not done this i would have had to return for another operation. so deffo go for it…

Hi

i live in Spain & had sentinel node biopsy and tumour clearance in February, when they id it. It is really good just to have the sentinel removed if that is clear saves node clearance. It is quite clever how it works, they inject your boob with radio active dye, then track it under special xray, then they mark it & insert a small tube to show the surgeon where the sentinel node is. Your nodes are so small they can’t be seen with the human eye. It doesn’t really hurt, I was wide awake.During the big op, while I was still under the results came back clear & so off I went home quite sore but thinking wow got off lightly usually no chemo if not in sentinel. A few days later I had a telgram from the hospital(I live in the mountains not much mobile reception)they said the lab in Madrid found it in the sentinel so had to go back in for node clearance now that hurts, if you can have sentinel & it’s clear saves all that pain.If you have to have chemo it’s not as bad as you imagine. I have now just had 2nd lot of chemo not too bad first left me with awful hangover feeling but they gave me something to counteract it. I was told by Sue that I met on this site to ASK for anti sickness medicine as it costs a lot of money & they don’t give it unless you ask.

Let me know how it goes,If you need any more info just ask I am an expert now!!!.

Good luck

Maggie

Had sentinel lode biopsy and lump taken on the 14th.
No real problems with wound sight at all since.
Like the other lady said, you are injected with radio active dye an hour or so before the op.My boob is still blue from the dye and your pee is too for a couple of days after!
I didnt have results straight away though so I dont now if the nodes are affected.Should have an appoint: soon.
The wound site, and under my arm is a little tender and some areas numb but it hant given me any real problems.
I wish I had been in an area where they now straight away though so they could have done the procedure there and then if needed.

hi,
i also had WLE and sentinal node biobsy - they removed two nodes on the 15th may, just been informed by my hospital that my app for the results is 10th june this is 4 wks after surgery! There seems to be a lot of people who get their results immediately and wondered if anyone else has had to wait this long. I also had to wait 7 wks for an US and Mammogram after i had been to see my gp with my lump in march - has this been the case for other people?

Like Jeanie i have some pain under armpit but otherwise seem to have almost full movement back in the arm now. Also they never warned me about the numbness - freaked out in the ward a bit after the painkillers wore off, but it’s apparantly normal i now find out!

I learnt from my mistakes after having a C-section (cos i felt ok at first but then suffered the next 7 hrs in agony as the anaesthetic wore off and no-one asked if i wanted a painkiller again til the morning!) so as soon as i came round this time i asked for pills!

Good luck with yours Latk - hope all goes well
